Scheel, Farrell (30 Jan. 1912 - 26 June 1960)

Mrs. Ralph Scheel of Spencer, formerly of Colby and Abbotsford, age 48, became the sixth traffic fatality of the year in Marathon county early Sunday morning when she was apparently killed instantly when the auto in which they were returning from Colby went out of control at a curve on Highway 13, in the north limits of the village of Spencer, and plunged more than 200 feet into a field.

Traffic officers fixed the time of the accident at 12:01 o’clock Sunday morning and said that Mrs. Scheel was thrown through the back window of the car driven by her husband as he failed to negotiate the turn from Highway 13 to County Highway V. The car left the road, went into the ditch and toppled end-over-end. Her body was only inches from the wrecked car.

Mr. Scheel, age 52, was also thrown to the rear section of the car, but remained inside the vehicle. He sustained scalp lacerations and back injuries. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, where his condition was reported as being "good."

Mrs. Scheel was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Dr. H. T. Calahan of Spencer. He said that death was due to a fractured neck. She also suffered a fractured right shoulder.

Herbert Lambers of Edgar, Marathon county coroner, who investigated the accident, said that the couple undoubtedly were familiar with the road, but probably were talking and approached the curve unaware of the danger ahead.

The couple moved to Spencer about three years ago when Mr. Scheel began employment as a driver for the Pathfinder Mobile Home Corporation. The Scheels operated a cheese factory east of Colby before moving to Abbotsford from where they moved to Spencer. For several years, they were in the grocery business in Abbotsford and Colby, Wis.

Mrs. Scheel, the former Farrell Clark, was born on January 30, 1912 in Rock county. She and Mr. Scheel were married on August 20, 1931. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon in the Presbyterian church in Abbotsford with Rev. Lawrence Faivre officiating. Internment followed in the Riverside Cemetery at Withee.

Survivors include the widower; two daughters, Mrs. Robert Hebert of Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Leroy Hainzlsperger of Stevens Point; two sisters, Mrs. Chris Schneider of Brodhead and Mrs. Orville Gruenwald of Evanston; a brother, Eugene Clark of Brodhead; her mother, Mrs. Zimmerman of Brodhead; five grand children.
