Humbird (4 March 1971)

Some of our folks are still waiting for the snowplow to come and plow them out. Snow-blowers, yes, they are good, but cannot blow the snow up over the big drifts we have. March came in cold, a zero temperature, but by mid-day it was in the high 20’s. The old saying March comes in like a lion it will go out like a lamb, and vice versa. Oh - well - These weekend blizzards keep most folks home so there is a scarcity of news.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Finnegan of Burlington were dinner guests Sunday at the Arnold Matti home.

Mrs. Freida Zerbel is visiting at the LaVern Kaufman home in rural Fairchild for several days.

Henry Laffe spent the weekend in Rochester, Minn., with his wife who is a patient at the Methodist hospital there. Her room number is 603. He found her improving and in good spirits.

Mrs. Johanna Olson spent Thursday and Friday at the Allan Zimmermann home in Fairchild.

Mr and Mrs. Perle Pickett and Charley Fees enjoyed a fishing trip Thursday on the Mississippi River at Onalaska. A nice catch of fish is reported.

Mr. and Mrs. John Greub and Mr. and Mrs. Chet Bailey attended the funeral of Max Schenk at Hixton Tuesday and also the funeral of Thomas Sliter in Merrillan afterward.

Mrs. Levi Fitzmaurice spent Friday afternoon with Ida Campbell in the Fairchild nursing home.

Mrs. Campbell remains in critical condition.

Mrs. Fred Theiler and Mrs. Theodore Polege were in Black River Falls Tuesday.

Mr and Mrs. Glen Stuve drove to Minneapolis Monday to meet a plane and bring his mother home from her winter’s visit at the home of her daughter in Downeyville, Calif.

Mr. and Mrs. Perle Pickett were Sunday evening visitors at the August Burnett home in rural Merrillan.

Mrs. Lyle Newell entertained a group of neighbors and friends Thursday afternoon.

Mr and Mrs. Mel Markham visited Sunday afternoon at the Archie Kirby home.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Johnson entertained at a birthday dinner party Sunday in honor of their daughter, Cheryl. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. George Zuehlke, Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. George Zuehlke, Jr., and two children of Loyal, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Johnson of Taylor and Maureen Pokorny. The dinner was also in honor of the birthday of Mrs. Zuehlke, Sr.

Mrs. Martin Adler and son and family came Saturday to visit his father, Herb Adler, and to take her husband home after spending two weeks here. All returned home Sunday to Round Lake, Ill. Saturday evening Herbert Adler, with his son and family were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Adler in Eau Claire.

Mr. and Mrs. Jake Lightfoot, Jr., and family were dinner guests Sunday of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Lightfoot, Sr.

Philip Feyen was taken by ambulance to the Neillsville Hospital Tuesday, very ill.

Mrs. Margaret Marin is now home and improving. Her daughter, Mrs. Ilene Anderson of Madison, is with her.

Mrs. Christine Hansen was with her son, Melnard Hansen, in Greenwood for a couple of weeks recently. Mrs. Kenneth Seelow of Milwaukee is staying with Mrs. Hansen now. Monday, Mrs. Richard Seelow of Neillsville came to spend the day with Mrs. Hansen.

Mr. and Mrs. James Martin of Beloit were here Sunday to see his mother, Mrs. Margaret Martin, and spend the day with the home folks.

Mrs. Rudy Aeschbacher and Mrs. Archie Kirby were quite sick several days last week.
