Devine, James (7 FEB 1862 - 3 MAR 1949)

James Devine Sr., a pioneer resident of this community (Owen, Clark Co., Wis.) passed away a week ago today, March 3rd, 1949, at his farm home just east of the city, after suffering from a lingering illness. Funeral services were conducted Monday morning at 9 a.m. from the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Fr. Raymond Bornbach officiating. Burial was made in the Riverside Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Cornelius Driscoll, Louis Nowak, Henry B. Mauel Sr., Charlie Kovatch, Mike Kovatch and Leonard Hamm.

James Devine Sr., a resident of the community for the past 40 years, was laid to rest in the family lot in the Riverside Cemetery on Monday, March 7th, after having succumbed to a lingering illness caused by complications of old age. He passed away on March 3rd, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, at the age of 87 years and 24 days. Services were conducted from the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Owen, with Fr. Raymond Bornbach officiating. Pallbearers, members of the Holy Name Society, H. B. Mauel, Sr., Mike Kovatch, Chas. Kovatch, Leonard Hamm, Louis Nowak and Cornelius Driscoll.

Born on Feb. 7, 1862, at Rutland, Vermont, where he resided until he was four years of age, at which time he moved with his parents to Wilson, Wis. He resided with his family for 40 years and met and married Margaret Dooner in Nov. 1894. In 1909 they and their family moved to Ladysmith living there but three months before moving to Owen in 1909, at which time he settled on the present day farm just east of the city limits.

After coming to this community he worked hard in developing his tract of farm land and at the same time worked in factories of the city before his retirement 20 years ago.

Surviving him are his wife and five sons, George, Morris and Howard of Owen; James of Withee and John, Milwaukee and 21 grandchildren.
