Smith, James W. (27 OCT 1866 - JUN 1950)

Funeral services were held from the Griebenow Funeral Home (Owen, Wisconsin) Tuesday afternoon, June 13, 1950, at two o’clock for James W. Smith. The Rev. H. D. Wagner, pastor of the Alliance Chapel, Owen, officiated. Burial was made in the Riverside Cemetery. Pallbearers were Walter Fritz, Robert Nissen, C. E. Beck, Cornelius Driscoll, Ebner Gustafson and William Hingiss, Sr. Those in charge of flowers were his granddaughters, Betty Smith, Dorothy Paulsen, Lavade Smith, Hope Cenite, Lois Speaker and Arlene Moore.

J. W. Smith was born in Missouri on Oct. 27, 1866. It was in Missouri that his early childhood was spent. When he was a young man he moved with his parents to Indian Territory, which later became Oklahoma. In the summer of 1882 they moved to Wisconsin, coming here in a covered wagon and settling in the present day Town of Hoard (Clark Co., Wis.).

To this union nine children were born, all of whom are living and were here to attend the funeral services. The children are Mrs. )Mae) Meilhem, Dodgeville, Wis.; Mrs. (Ethel) Bowen, Curtiss; Mrs. (Carrie) Plath, Mason City, Iowa; Mrs. (Ruth) Moore, Mason City, Iowa; Mrs. (Ida) Treloar, Milwaukee; Mrs. (Nina) Adams, Baraboo; William Smith, Stitzer, Wis.; James Smith, Loyal; and Hiram Smith, Newton, Iowa. His wife preceded him in death on Aug. 20, 1935.

Mrs. smith married again, and his present wife is residing in Arkansas, where Mrs. Smith passed away at the age of 83 years and 8 months. Surviving, besides his nine children, are 44 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren, and a host of friends, who mourn his passing.

Among those from out of town that attended the services were Mrs. Estelle Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Walker, Scranton, Iowa; Mrs. Irvin Eugelke, Platteville, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Ned Speaker, Galena, Ill.; Jack Beerkeicher, Dodgeville, Wis.; Mrs. Melvin Paulsen, Des Moines, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Oberbillig and daughter Lila of Eau Claire.
