Gosse, Maynard (16 May 1928 - 29 July 1946)

Funeral services for Maynard Gosse, 18, who was accidentally drowned while swimming in the Big Eau Pleine at Cherokee Park, Monday afternoon, will be held Friday afternoon at 1:00 o’clock at the home and at 2:00 o’clock at the Christ Lutheran church at Abbotsford, The Rev. F. H. Sprengler will officiate and internment will be made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery.

Maynard Gosse and Vane Gokey, Jr., both of whom were employed at the Federation during the summer vacation, went swimming at Cherokee park Monday afternoon. According to Vane, they were trying to reach a rock in the river and had almost reached it when Maynard began to "plau out." Gokey tried to save Maynard but was almost overcome himself.

The accident happened about 3:00 o’clock and the body was not recovered until 4:30. Dr. A. W. Burek, Marathon county coroner, ascribed the death to accidental drowning.

The body was taken to the Lulloff Funeral home at Colby and on Tuesday was taken to the home where it is lying in state.

Maynard Gosse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gosse, was born May 16, 1928, in the town of Colby, Wis. He attended the Abbotsford schools and was graduated from the Abbotsford high school in May. He was active in band and glee club activities in school as well as the choir in the Lutheran church.

Maynard was an only child and the only grand child. Besides his parents, he leaves his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Schueller, and grand father, William Gosse. He leaves one uncle, Melvin Gosse, and two aunts, the Misses Minnie and Elfrieda Schueler, all of the town of Colby, Wis.
