Froeba, Thomas (25 MAR 1864 - 14 JUL 1945)

A requiem high mass was conducted at St. Anthony’s Catholic church at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, for Thomas Froeba, 81, who passed away at his home in the village at 7:10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Aloys Zinthefer officiated at the funeral service, and interment was in St. Anthony’s cemetery.

Mr. Froeba was born in Bavaria, Germany, on Mar. 25, 1864. He was educated in Germany and came to this country in 1888, at the age of 24 years. Before coming to the United States he served in the German army.

After settling in Jefferson county and working on a farm, he came, in 1897 to the town of Loyal, where he purchased a farm and lived for 45 years. On Apr. 12, 1899, he was married to Mary Gleiter at Jefferson. Last year Mr. and Mrs. Froeba moved to the village, where he had purchased a home.

For nine years he served as director on the school board in the township, and during that period a new schoolhouse was built. He served on the town board for five years and was director of the Loyal State Bank and the Citizens State Bank of Loyal. The Latter closed on Tuesday morning during the funeral services.

Pallbearers were Ed Domine, Nick Beaver, George Frei, John Elsinger Sr., Wendel and Edwin Gall. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. H. H. Christofferson of Colby, W. J. Rush of Neillsville, C. B. Esselman, George Weyhmiller, Fred Lakosky and J. R. Colby, Wis.

Surviving, besides his wife, are three sons, Albert of Marshfield, Edwin of Racine and Clarence of Loyal, and 17 grandchildren. With the exception of a niece at Cleveland, O., there are no other relatives in the states. Five brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gehrke, Mrs. Julia Gleiter, Mrs. John Gleiter, and Sam Gleiter, all of Alma; Mrs. Martin Dragseth, Mrs. George Schmidt, and daughters, Vivian and Mrs. Phyllis Miller, and Mrs. Harold Burdick, all of Barron; Mr. and Mrs. Ed J. Froeba and son of Racine, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Froeba and family of Marshfield.
