Saxe, E. G. (? - Sept. 1947)

Neillsville - The search for E. G. Saxe, which was instigated Friday night by Mrs. Saxe, when her husband failed to return to their home, ended Saturday morning about 11:00 o’clock when his body was discovered by Leonard Simons, a neighbor, in a branch of the Popple river, three miles north of Owen.

Saxe, a former Owen tavern keeper, more recently employed by J. C. Priebnow, Loyal, had been arraigned on Friday, Aug. 29, before Justice Glenn Haven here, on a charge of converting more than $400 of his employer’s money to his own use. At that time Saxe requested a continuance of the matter, which was granted, and he was scheduled to appear again before Justice Haven on Friday, Sept. 5.

The defendant, however, failed to appear for arraignment on the charge. He had been released on bond of $1,000 furnished by Henry Becker, former Wood county sheriff, now operating a local restaurant.

Saxe visited Friday night with his wife at their farm home and when he left the place and failed to return, she became alarmed. Neighbors were notified and a search was begun. His body was found in about five feet of water.
