Newell, Carrie Bell (29 October 1869 - 23 March 1952)

Mrs. Carrie Bell Newell, age 82, of 208 East 9th Street, died on Saturday afternoon at the Neillsville Hospital, where she had been a patient for four days.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday at two o’clock from the Georgas Funeral Home. Interment was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery with layman Henry Elmhorst officiating.

Mrs. Newell was born October 29, 1869, to Dallas and Mary Roberts Vernam in Warren County, Bolton, N.Y. She came to Wisconsin with her parents in 1871. They located at Christie, where she received her education in the schools there and at Neillsville. On December 8, 1886, she was married to Wilder Newell at Neillsville. They lived in Wausau from 1908 until 1913. Mrs. Newell was recognized as one of the leading artists of the state. She reproduced work of master painters of the world like Raphael, Turner, Rosa Bonheur and many others. She did original scenes of Wisconsin lakes and woods. One New York artist viewing her paintings at Wausau gave her the highest praise. He valued her Madonna as being well worth a thousand dollars.

Mrs. Newell is survived by the following children, Mrs. Leslie (Eva) Marden of Neillsville, Leo F. Newell of Englewood, Calif., Mrs. Enhelder (Clara) Fielding of Knights Landing, Calif., Mrs. Leroy (Ida) Cunningham of Three Lakes, Cassius Newell at home, and Mrs. Homer (Bethel) Webster of Neillsville; 16 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Mr. Newell preceded his wife in death on May 24, 1937.

Pallbearers were: Albert Mohr, Eldred Elmhorst, William Neville, Ernest Campbell, Victor Anderson and Millard Chadwick.

Persons from out of town attending the rites included: Miss Yvonne Webster of St. Paul, Mr. and Mrs. L. Cunningham, and Mrs. Jean Brewster of Three Lakes, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Wall and family of Madison.
