Roethe, dward Julius (1879 –1952)

E. J. Roethe, 73, son-in-law of Conrad Frantz of Neillsville, was buried in the Prairie Cemetery following his recent death at Fennimore.

Mr. Roethe had been publisher of the Fennimore Times for over 50 years.  He served three terms as mayor of Fennimore, was one of the organizers of the Chamber of Commerce and its first president; was the first president of the Kiwanis Club and a member of the State Fair advisory board for eight years.

Mr. Roethe was born in Whitewater and attended school there, teaching country school in Milwaukee county before coming to Fennimore.

He married Miss Bessie Barbara Frantz in Neillsville in 1906.  She survives him along with six children, Donald, Charles, Mrs. Charlotte Brainerd, of Fennimore; Arthur of Monroe, Leo of Ft. Atkinson and Catherine of Wrightwood, Calif.; and 12 grandchildren.

Mr. Roethe was one of the foremost political figures in south-western Wisconsin and gained statewide recognition during his many years in public office.  He was one of the leaders of the Republican party, serving as chairman at state conventions and in many other capacities within party ranks.
