She grew up on the family farm and received her education in the Greenwood area, graduating from Greenwood High School in 1944. After high school, Mildred moved to Milwaukee to work, and it was there that she was united in marriage to Charles Edward Herrick on Nov. 24, 1945.

They moved to Greenwood and bought a service station on the north end of town and operated Herrick's Gas Station for two years. They then owned and operated North Mound Tavern in Willard for one year, before moving back into Greenwood. Mildred then went to work at the Farmer's Store, and worked there for several years until it closed. She then worked at the Greenwood I.G.A. for a short time, before becoming employed as a receptionist for the Greenwood Telephone Company. She worked many years at the telephone company until her retirement in 1982.
