Carter, Ed (24 SEP 1863 - 21 NOV 1952)

Ed Carter, a pioneer resident of Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), who made his home here for 46 years, was laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery Monday afternoon, Nov. 24th.  Funeral services were conducted at two o’clock from Griebenow’s Funeral Home with Rev. Arthur Meinhardt of the First Congregational Church officiating.  Friends serving as pallbearers were Arnold Larsen, Shurleigh Grimes, Harvey Weddig, Jess Bundensen, Dr. C. M. Toraason and Ed Ruesch, Owen.

The deceased passed away on Nov. 21, 1952 at Victory memorial Hospital, Stanley.  He had been in especially good and active health up to the time of his death.  The previous Wednesday, Nov. 19th, he helped his son Robert pull feathers on a turkey and was in the best of spirit.  He went to bed that night and sometime in his sleep went into a coma.  He was taken to the hospital early Thursday morning where he passed away at 4:20 Friday morning without regaining consciousness.

Ed Carter was born on Sept. 24, 1863 at Hammond Prairie.  He was the fourth child in a family of six boys and four girls.  All but one sister have preceded him in death.  He enjoyed his boyhood days at Hammond Prairie where he attended school until the completion of the eighth grade.  He then discontinued his school to follow contacts with the thriving lumber industry, going to work in a saw mill.

On Dec. 25, 1887 he and Edith Tulle (I think this was actually Tuttle) were united in marriage at Glenwood City where they lived until 1905, at which time they and their two daughters moved to Owen.  Here he also associated with the lumbering industry, being an employee of the John S. Owen Lumber Co.

After the death of his daughter, Gertrude, he and his wife adopted their grandson, Robert.  His wife died in 1947, but he continued to live in Owen with his son.  In 1951 he moved to Eau Claire with his son and daughter-in-law, living there until 1952 when they moved to Stanley, where he passed away.

"Ed" as he was known to his host of friends, was a congenial, entertaining personality who loved to sit back during his years of retirement and recall the pioneer days in the lumbering business and the growth of Owen.

He is survived by his son Robert of Stanley and one daughter, Mrs. Cressie B. Elliot of Fox Lake, Ill.
