Breed, Sarah Jane Manning  (Nov 27, 1814 - April 28, 1911)

Grandma Breed died last Friday at the home of her son, Frank, at the age of 97 years.  Sarah Jane Manning Breed was born in Lewis, Pennsylvania, on Nov. 27, 1814.  When she was but a small child her mother died and she was adopted by friends of the family and with them she moved to Schoen Lake, N.Y.  Here she grew to young womanhood, attending the Schoen Lake Academy.  On May 12, 1840, she was united in marriage to Jared Breed of Schoen Lake, and they resided there until in 1856, when they moved to South Haven, Mich.  She lived there until in 1870, when she came to Neillsville to make her home.  Mr. Breed died about 35 years ago.  Mrs. Breed made her home with a cousin, Chas. Breed, for a number of years until he removed from this city,  but for the past 15 years she has made her home with her son, Frank.

Mrs. Breed was a splendid type of the rugged, kindly and Christian womanhood.  She was a member of the Methodist Church and her life had earnestly lived up to her religion.  She died at the age of 97 years, and her life was one well spent in the endeavor to so conduct herself that her memory would always be a pleasant one.  For the past ten years she had been in feeble health, but her death was due to a gradual wearing down of the body and old age.  At the time of his death Mr. Breed was 99 years of age.

Mrs. Breed was the mother of eight children, three of whom survive her.  Her oldest son died in Libby Prison.  The children surviving her are Mrs. E. Tolford of Blaine, Wash.; Emery Breed of Holcomb and Frank Breed of this city.  The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the family residence and was conducted by Rev. Burrows.  Emery Breed and son, Clarence, were here to attend the funeral.

In Mrs. Breed’s pocketbook was found the following clipping from the Neillsville Times which will prove of interest to the friends of the ladies mentioned, and recall, possibly, the event mentioned.

"Grandma Curtiss gave a birthday party last Friday.  The 80th event of that kind which it has been her happiness to celebrate.  There were invived in to spend the day with her, Mrs. Harriman, aged 86 years, Mrs. Breed, aged 80 years, Mrs. McIntyre, of 79 summers, Mrs. Rogersons, a blushing young creature of 75, and the baby of the flock, Mrs. Rollins, who had only turned 67.  Mrs. Dewhurst was there, but will not be quoted as she belongs to a still more youthful generation.  They had a splendid time, and the young folks around the house had a hard time to keep then from tearing their clothes, they were so lively.  The united ages of the six ladies is 469 years."
