Cole, Martha #3 (3 DEC 1864 - 21 NOV 1955)

 

Mrs. Martha Cole, daughter of John and Sarah Cumpston, was born Dec. 3, 1864 in Lawrence Co., Ohio.  When 19 years of age she came to Vernon Co., Wis., and on May 1, 1888 was married to Dr. B. A. Cole.  They lived at West Lima, Wis. until May 1911 when they moved to a farm in the town of Butler, Clark Co., where Dr. Cole passed away in 1942.  After his death, Mrs. Cole continued to live on the farm with her only son, Bird, until his death in 1951.  Since that time she has made her home among her four daughters.  On Nov. 19 she suffered a stroke and passed away Nov. 21 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Leonard Johnson at the age of 90 years, 11 months and 18 days.

 

Mrs. Cole is survived by her four daughters, Mrs. Henry (Sarah) Dittner, Fall Creek; Mrs. George (Mary) Steinhaus, Cornell; Mrs. Bethel Beckman, Eau Claire, Mrs. Leonard (Lois) Johnson, Greenwood; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law and nephew, Mrs. Belle Cumpston, and son Noah of LaFarge, and a niece, Anita Lawton, Viroqua.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband and son, a grandson, her parents and brothers and sisters.

 

Funeral services were held at the Stabnow Funeral Home in Greenwood, by Rev. Lawrence Oman of the Mission Tabernacle, Eau Claire.  Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery.

 

Mrs. Munger of Eau Claire played and sang "In the Sweet By and By", "Jesus is Tenderly Calling" and "Meet Me There."

 

Pallbearers were grandsons, Maynard and Norman Dittner, Dale and Sam Johnson, , Charles Books, Edwin Muelling.

 

Relatives from away were: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dittner, Fall Creek; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Steinhaus, Cornell; Mrs. Bethel Beckman, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Books, Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Dittner, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Dittner and son; Mr. Edwin Muelling, all of Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Walker, Osseo; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Prust, Sheboygan, Miss Anita Lawton, Viroqua and Mrs. Belle Cumpston and son, LaFarge.

 

Friends came from Butlerville, Thorp, Viroqua, Cornel and Loyal.
