He was born on March 15, 1922 in Bartlesville, OK, the son of the late Tony and Katherine (Resnick) Welgos. After the death of his father, the family relocated to Lublin, WI.  In his younger years, along with his family, Wally enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing with the Lublin baseball team.

He served in the U. S. The family settled in Thorp in 1962, taking over the IGA grocery store where Country Floral is presently located.  In 1964, a new store was built where Hank’s Furniture is located.  In 1972, a new and larger store was built in the location of the current grocery store.  Walter and Ella, along with their children, operated the IGA Foodliner until the sale of their business in 2004.

After retirement, Wally enjoyed watching baseball, spending time with family and friends, and trips to the casino.  He was a proud member of the Thorp American Legion, Moose Lodge and Holy Assumption Orthodox Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ella, of Thorp; two sons: Tony (Kathy) of Aspen, CO and Danny (Maureen) of Thorp, WI; two daughters: Mary (Keith) Schmall of Boise, ID and Anne (Harry) Parks of Sheboygan Falls, WI; two sisters: Anne Ziemba of Thorp, WI and Bernice Pucillo of Petoskey, MI; one brother: Joe (MaryAnn) Jasek of Couderay, WI; six grandchildren: Ryan, Andy, Mark and Jacqueline Welgos; Kevin and Katherine Schmall.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Andrew; and one grandson, Elliot Welgos.

Wally will be remembered for his smile and generous heart.  He was proud of his community involvement and achievements throughout his life.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2010, at Holy Assumption Orthodox Church in Lublin, WI.  Fr. Ted Wojcik will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery.  A gathering of friends and family will begin at 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
