Mertes, John (4 August 1869 - 9 September 1958) 
 

Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon for John Mertes, 89, a former resident of Neillsville, who died September 9, at the Clark County Hospital in Owen. The Rev. George Grether officiated, and burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery. 
 

Mr. Mertes was born August 4, 1869, at West Bend, son of the late Peter and Margaret (Goeden) Mertes.  He received his education there and worked as a farm hand.  As a young man he came to Clark County. 
 

Following his marriage on April 20, 1898, to the former Martha Neumann at Neillsville, they farmed for a while, later moving into the city where Mr. Mertes as engaged as a painter. 
 

He is survived by two children, Floyd of Knapp, and Mrs. Ralph (Bernice) Northup of Granton. Eight Grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.  
 

Pallbearers were: Fred Wall, Claude Ayers, Bernard Dodte, John Trogner, Adolph Unger and George Frei. 
 

The Georgas Funeral Home made funeral arrangements. 
 

People from out of town attending were: Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Mertes, Miss Sylvia Lee Mertes, Knapp; Mrs. Eilef Bradford and daughter, Melody, Menomonie; Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Hardies, Altoona; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gotchling, Minneapolis, Minn.; and Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Egan, Eau Claire.
