Cook, Walter, E. #4 (21 DEC 1888 - 21 OCT 1955)

Funeral rites for Walter E. Cook, Unity, state assembly, were held Saturday afternoon at the Unity Methodist Church, with the Reverends Harvey Sehall, Raymond Fleming and Lee Holmes officiating.  A private family service at the Cook home preceded the church rites.

During the funeral service Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Domer sang "Be Thou Near: and "Under His Wings," accompanied by Tom Loughead at the piano.  The body was interred in the town of Brighton Cemetery, with the following nephews serving as pallbearers: Calvin Sewell, Russell, bob and Donald Cook, and Everett Capes.

Legislators present at the funeral of their colleague were: Senators Paul Rogan, Ladysmith; Hugh M. Jones,  and W. W. Clark and Mrs. Clark, Vesper; and Assemblymen Kuhlman, Eau Claire; Willis Hutnik, Tony; John S. Crawford, Marshfield, and Vincent J. Zellinger and Mrs. Zellinger, Phillips.

Assemblyman Cook, 66, died Oct. 12, 1955 at the Methodist Hospital, Madison.  Death was attributed to complications which developed following surgery.

A lifelong resident of Unity, Assemblyman Cook was serving his 6^th term in office.  He served three successive terms in the Assembly, 1939 - 1945, and was re-elected in 1950, 1952 and 1954.  He was chairman of the Assembly’s Labor Committee and a member of its Agriculture Committee.  Mr. Cook was a former council member and school treasurer at Unity and was affiliated with the Unity Methodist Church.

Mr. Cook was born on a farm near Unity on Dec. 21, 1888.  He received his education in the village schools and owned and operated a farm for 17 years.  He was a farm and livestock auctioneer for 28 years, and also dealt in real estate.

Surviving Mr. Cook are his wife, twin daughters, Harriet at home, and Mrs. John (Dorothy) Cromie, Seattle, Wash.; two brothers, George F. Cook, Unity, and Raymond Cook, Marathon; two sisters, Mabel Cook, Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Andrew (Edith) Tollefson, Solon Springs, and one grandchild.  He was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.
