Griffin, Tom (Marshal murdered - 1912)

Sheriff Bradford brought to Neillsville two young men who are suspected of being the murderers of Marshall Griffin of Owen.  The young men gave their names as Jos. Meyers and Geo. Butler and have been confined in the Wood county jail for the past sixty days, having been arrested at Marshfield for carrying concealed weapons.  At the time of their arrest both men were heavily armed.  It is understood that the farmer who was held up and robbed on the night of the shooting at Owen has identified the prisoners as the fellows who held him up.  It is claimed that the hold-up men were the same fellows who a short time after on the same night shot and fatally wounded the village marshal, and who later died at Eau Claire as the result of his wounds.  Meyers and Butler were brought up before Police Justice Fountz Monday and a hearing was set for Oct. 9th.  Just what evidence the state has against the two men is not known, but from rumors there seems to be considerable strong evidence against them.
