Lawrence, Anna (12 Jul 1848 - 28 Apr 1913)

Mrs. Anna Lawrence died at her home on Court street early Monday morning after an illness of several weeks.  She was born Anna Mentzel in Schlesing, Germany, July 12, 1848.  When she was 12 years of age her mother and father died within a week of each other, and she and her two sisters were forced to care for themselves early in life.  About 1870 the three sisters came to this country, spending a few years in the southern part of this state.  Miss Mentzel came to Neillsville in 1873 and on Aug. 3, 1875, she was united in marriage to Michael Lawrence.  Seven children were born to them, three of whom still survive their parents.  Mr. Lawrence died 21 years ago.  Deceased is survived by her daughter, Bertha, and sons, John and Emil.  Also by her sisters Mrs. Lye of Grafton and Mrs. Carl Schraff of town Grant.  Emil Lawrence is expected home from Kansas City, Mo.

Mrs. Lawrence was a lady of merit for in the face of adversity and death she maintained a pleasant demeanor and cheerful disposition.  She was charitable and kindly and throughout her life she adhered closely to the Golden Rule and lived so that her presence was a pleasure and a comfort to those with whom she came in contact.  The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, services being held at the Lutheran church, of which she was a member, and interment being made in the Neillsville cemetery.
