Lewis, Darol D. (19 January 1931 - 5 June 2010)

Darol Lewis, 79, died Saturday, June 5, 2010, at the Neillsville Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Darol was born Jan. 19, 1931, in Augusta, on the home farm, the son of William and Nana (Warner) Lewis.  He attended country school at age four (a year early) to help his five-year-old brother, ill with diabetes, walk the four miles every day.  After eight years he attended four years of high school, graduating at Augusta in 1948.  After school he continued to farm with his parents due to their ill health.  In 1955 he married Margaret Reber at Neillsville and in 1958 they purchased her father’s farm in the Town of Grant.  After farming over 40 years, Darol was injured in the barn, forcing the sale of the farm due to the illness of his diabetes.  From there, Darol and Margaret moved to Glenn Short’s house on USH 10, and Darol worked for his beloved friend, Benny Heck in Christie and also for Steve Short’s farm.  In 2003, Darol and Margaret moved to Neillsville, as he was becoming more ill and couldn’t work any longer.  In 2005, after being hospitalized for three months, he entered the Memorial Nursing Home.

He loved farming, planting, harvesting and when baby calves were born.   He especially loved his two older John Deere antique tractors and always said, "John Deere was the very best!"

He was a loving husband, father, granddad and great-granddad.  He was very proud of his four sons and so happy when they and grandkids came to visit and tell him what they were doing.

Darol is survived by two sons, Todd (Sue) Lewis of Granton, and Bradley (Bernadette) of Neillsville; a daughter-in-law, Marcia Lewis of Neillsville; six grandkids, Pamela (Scott) Sill, Joshua, Craig, Travis, Amanda and Courtney; two step-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Tayler Sill and great-grandchildren, Alexis, Makayla and Benjamin Sill and Conner Lewis.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; two sons, David and Glen; his parents: three brothers, Dale, David and Dean and a sister Clara Dawn.

Funeral services for Darol will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday June 10, 2010, at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville.  Pastor Douglas Bjerke will officiate.  Interment will be in the Town of Grant Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
