Laurent, Edith #2 (22 DEC 1911 - 20 AUG 1957)

 

A former Owen (Clark Co., Wis.) resident, Mrs. Eugene Laurent, 45, passed away early Tuesday morning at the Medford Hospital where she had been a patient for five weeks.  She had been in ill health the past nine months following surgery for cancer.  She was the wife of Eugene Laurent, president of the Taylor County Teachers College.  Surviving besides her husband, are her mother, Mrs. Caroline Candahl of Owen, one sister, Mrs. Ray VanZile of Sturgis, Mich., and one brother, Ernest Candahl of La Crosse.

 

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon, Friday, at the Hoeper & Kraut Funeral Parlors in Owen.  Rev. D. K. Marks of New Ulm, Minn., and former pastor at Christ Church in Medford, will officiate at the rites, and burial will be in the Danish Cemetery at Withee.  Mrs. Robert Gingles of Medford, soloist, will be accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Theresa Paurs of Prairie du Chien, a school friend of Mrs. Laurent.

 

Serving as pallbearers will be John Cross of Marshfield, Herbert Juneau of Abbotsford, Al Pries of Medford, Arthur Prochnow, Gilman, and Bill Krause and Harvey Boie, Thorp.

 

Asked to take charge of flowers have been Medford friends of the deceased.  They are Mesdames Jake Hartman, Clem Ostertag, Roger Putnam, Norbert Nolan, Orvus Dodsworth and Al Pries.

 

Mrs. Laurent, the former Edith Candahl, was born in Jaelland, Denmark, on Dec. 22, 1911.  She came to America with her parents when she was a young child and spent most of her life in Owen and Milwaukee.  She is a graduate of Bay View High School in Milwaukee, Rock County Normal and Wis. State College, Stevens Point.

 

Her marriage to Eugene Laurent took place at Curtiss on Nov. 16, 1944.  Mr. Laurent took principalship of the Teachers college in Medford nine years ago and they lived in that city until three years ago when they purchased a home in Perkinstown.

 

An elementary teacher, Mrs. Laurent taught in various Clark County rural schools and also taught in California and Albuquerque, N.M.  She was a member of the Abbotsford public school staff when she became ill.

 

She was a member of Christ Church in Medford and also of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and of the Medford Study Club.  She worked with the American Cancer Society as a volunteer for many years and served as district adjutant in that organization.  She also headed the society’s local drive for funds for a number of years.
