Becker, Carl W. Sr. (March 6, 1940 - August 2, 2010)

 

Carl W. Becker Sr., 70, Tomahawk, died Monday, Aug. 2, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, where he had been a patient the past month. He was surrounded by his family.

 

Carl Becker was born March 6, 1940 in Prentice to the late James and Margaret (Hipp) Becker Sr. He attended Medford area schools.


On February 23, 1961 at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif., he married Leona B. Seimatewa, who survives.

 

He served in the United States Marine Corps from July 1958 to March 1962 and was stationed at 29 Palms, Port Hueneme and El Toro, and reached the rank of sergeant. In 1962 they bought a small dairy farm in the Town of Little Black and he worked at Hurd part time as a general laborer. He also drove milk truck for Pleasant Valley Dairy. They sold the farm in Little Black and purchased a larger dairy farm in the Town of Hammel, which they owned until 1979. They moved to Abbotsford where he was an independent truck driver for about four years. He drove trucks for various businesses until his retirement in 2007.


He was a member of Klossner-Dietzler VFW No. 5729 of Medford and Leach Paulson American Legion Post No. 517 of Dorchester, and a former member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.

 

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, working on cars, camping, visiting family and friends, and will always be remembered as a jokester.


In addition to his wife, survivors include five children, Norma "Jean" (Jim) Thums of Medford, Carl Jr. (Laura) of Owen, Louise Becker of Abbotsford, Calvin (Jennifer) of Stetsonville and Cheryl (Travis) Anderson of Wausau; a sister, Elizabeth (Tony) Zak of Stetsonville; two brothers, George of Medford and James Jr. (Brenda) of Tomahawk; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers in infancy; and a sister, Emma Pierce in 2009.

 

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 6 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stetsonville, with Rev. James Babler officiating. Burial will be at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Stetsonville. Pallbearers will be Calvin Becker, Jennah Welch, Jared Zastrow, Travis Anderson, Casey Thums, Alyssa Kovalaske, Shannon Cabe and John Svejda.


Visitation will be held at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford on Thursday, Aug. 5 from 4 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.


In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to his family to be designated at a later date.
