Schmidt, Frank J. (18 Feb. 1865 - 6 May 1960)

Frank J. Schmidt, 95, died Friday at the Havenet Nursing Home at Owen. Mr. Schmidt was familiarly known as "Klondike" and will be remembered as traveling about town on a bicycle until he was about 90 years old when he left the community.

Five weeks ago, Mr. Schmidt entered a nursing home at Greenwood and later went to Havenet Home at Owen.

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock with the Rev. Lillian Jensen officiating. During the services, three songs were sung by Miss Linnaca Jensen, Miss Rachael Mantik, and Emery Jensen with Mrs. Rueben Mantik as accompanist. They sang "Nearer My God To Thee," "Beyond the Sunset" and "I Won’t Have to Cross Jordan Alone."

Internment was made in the Abbotsford cemetery. Pallbearers were Anton Carlson, Harry Emling, Henry Hingiss, Louis Mauritz, Henry Ortmeier and Elden Viets.

Frank J. Schmidt was born in Austria Feb. 18, 1865. He was married in Bohemia Oct. 5, 1890, to Anna Maly. They made their home near Teplice on the border of Saxony for about 10 years before coming to America.

Mr. Schmidt served as corporal in the Austrian army for about 12 years, and was employed as a railroader, switchman and brakeman, prior to coming to America.

He landed in New York in Jan. 1960, (***mistake in original newspaper) and then went to Chili where he was employed for about five months, after which he came to Abbotsford. Here he worked at railroad jobs and digging wells and basements and laying tile.

Mrs. Schmidt preceded him in death Jan. 14, 1933. Their only daughter, Mrs. Bertha Brown, who came here with her mother when she was nine years old, also preceded her father in death.

Surviving him are two grand sons, John Brown of La Crosse and Frank Brown of Pittsville. There are nine great grand children.

Mr. and Mrs. John Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown were here for the funeral of their grand father.
