Mitchell, Anna A. (14 JUN 1868 - 17 AUG 1951)

Mrs. Edward J. Mitchell, a resident of Manitowish Waters for nearly half a century, was laid to rest in our local cemetery, Monday, Aug. 20th, beside the remains of her late husband, Edward, who passed away eight years prior.  The body lay at rest at the Bolger Parlors of Minocqua whence it was brought to our Town Hall for obsequies and final rites conducted by Rev. Milton B. Leisman, assisted by the ladies of the Manitowish Waters Community Church.

On June 14, 1868, Mrs. Mitchell was born in Milwaukee and her named her Anna Alvira.  In the early nineteen hundreds she became associated with Deer Park Lodge on Lake Manitowish.  On Aug. 18, 1911, she married Edward J. Mitchell, a well-known local woodsman and guide.  From a modest beginning they developed one of the most famous resorts of the community.  In the old days it was primarily a fisherman’s resort, patronized by noted and celebrated personages.  Mrs. Mitchell was the leading light and the guiding spirit of the enterprise, a hostess who never overlooked a chance to give the fullest measure of devotion toward the happiness and comforts of her guests.

In 1943 when her husband passed away she sold her resort to Mr. and Mrs. James Burt so that she may live a retired life amid the beautiful surroundings she has so ably helped to create and with her niece, Mrs. James Burt, so ever watchful over her comforts.

Last May a car in which she was a passenger ran out of control, struck a pole and she was severely injured.  Taken to the Fort Atkinson Hospital, she remained until death.  Though about recovered from her injuries, complications of another serious nature developed and she passed peacefully away on Aug. 17th, 1951 at the age of 83 years.

Three brothers, Frank Kline of Loyal (Clark Co., Wis.), Ira and Fred of California, as well as a sister, Mrs. Ed Haslow of Loyal, survive, also numerous nieces and nephews in various sections of the country, including Mrs. James Burt of Manitowish Waters.
