RedEagle, Douglas (31 July 1942 - 22 September 2010)

 

Douglas "Heex" RedEagle, Sr., 68, of rural Neillsville (Dells Dam), Clark County, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, as the result of an accident.

 

Doug was born July 31, 1942, in Tomah to Guy and Adelaide (Blackhawk) RedEagle.  He was raised in the Dells Dam area of Clark County.

 

He was currently a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation Traditional Court, a position he has proudly held for the past 14 years.  Doug greatly enjoyed attending law conferences throughout the United States and Canada.  He was also currently employed as a Ho-Chunk language teacher.  He had previously been employed as a youth coordinator by the Ho-Chunk Nation.  He also was a Native American draftsman and an artist.

 

Doug enjoyed traveling, leatherwork, beading, music, visiting, fishing, and horseshoes.

 

Survivors include a daughter, Laura (Timothy Benninghoff) RedEagle of Madison; three sons, Douglas (Allison) RedEagle, Jr. of Black River Falls, Shane RedEagle of Menomonie and Andrew RedEagle of La Crosse; four grandchildren, Brittany RedEagle, Derek RedEagle, Morella Benninghoff and Athena Benninghoff; and other relatives and friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Adelaide RedEagle; two sisters, Janice and Diana; and his chokas.

 

Traditional Native American (Ho-Chunk) funeral services were held at noon Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, at the Douglas RedEagle, Sr. residence at Dells Dam.  George "Heezazuc" Garvin was the presiding elder.  Burial followed in the RedEagle Homestead Cemetery.

 

Friends and family members were invited for visitation Saturday, Sept. 25, from 9:30 a.m. until noon at the RedEagle residence.

 

The Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, assisted the family with arrangements.

Neillsville Man killed in ATV crash - By Peter Spicer -

 

A Neillsville man was killed while riding his ATV in the Town of Levis Wednesday, Sept. 22.

 

Douglas RedEagle Sr., 68 of Neillsville was killed when the ATV he was riding collided with a vehicle driven by Danea Zeigle, 17, of Neillsville.

 

The Clark County Sheriff’s Department received a 9 - 1 - 1 call about the crash at approximately 7:30 a.m. the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 22.

 

The collision took place at Bush Road in the Town of Levis.  An initial investigation indicated Zeigle was eastbound on Bush Road when she struck RedEagle’s ATV, which was towing a trailer.

 

RedEagle was thrown from the ATV and killed instantly.  Clark County Coroner Richard Schleifer pronounced him dead at the scene.

 

The Clark County Sheriff’s Department and Wisconsin State Patrol will continue the investigation.

 

The Neillsville Ambulance Service and Neillsville Fire Department assisted at the scene. The death was the third county traffic fatality of 2010.
