Brown, Roy (18 APR 1873 - 30 NOV 1956)

Roy Brown, former Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) man, died at Waco, Texas on Friday, Nov. 30th, 1956, of old age infirmities.  He had reached the age of 83 years, 7 months and 12 days.

Roy was the son of the late Bernard J. Brown, Civil War Veteran and early settler in what is now the town of Reseburg.  He was born on April 18, 1873 at Augusta, Wis., where his mother had been on a temporary visit, otherwise he would have been the first white child born in Reseburg (Clark Co.) territory.

Roy was brought up in the wooded area southeast of Thorp where his parents had taken up a homestead and his father ran a store and post office in a community named Winneoka, after his daughter, Mrs. Isaac Sisco.  He settled on a part of his father’s homestead and was united in marriage to Lucinda Warner in the year 1900.  To this union four children were born, Angus, Leo, Haskel and Bryce.  Two sons preceded him in death in 1918, and his wife in Sept. 1944.

He farmed here until 1919 and then moved with his family to Harlingen, Texas, where they resided until the death of Mrs. Brown in 1944, when they moved to Port Isabel, Texas.

In December 1948 the family moved to Waco, Texas, where Mr. Brown spent the remainder of his days.  He retired from active work in 1950 because of ill health.

Surviving him are two sons, Leo and Dr. Bryce Brown of Waco, Texas, and one sister, Mrs. Isaac Sisco of Thorp, Wis., and five grandchildren, Roy, Dale, Brent, Alton and granddaughter, Carol Ann.  Also many friends from Texas and Wisconsin who remember him for his willingness to help in the time of need as a true and trusty friend.

The remains of the deceased were shipped to Thorp and lay in state at the Thorp Funeral Home until the time of the funeral services, which were conducted in the Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Cecil Ward, pastor of the Methodist Church, at 2:00 o’clock, Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 5th.  Burial was made in the family lot in the East Thorp Cemetery.
