Ann appreciation potluck supper was hosted by the Clark County Fair Directors for those who helped make the 1978 fair successful.

The Fair this year received a very favorable report from Mr. Ralph M. Cooper of the Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection, of Madison, Wisconsin, on his visit to the fair this year on August 3, 1978.

He stated “This is an old fair rich in tradition, yet keeping up with the times and changes to meet present day conditions.”

Among those attending with spouses were scribes, superintendents, County Board members, department heads, and extension staff, along with Directors and spouses.

A social evening was enjoyed with all attending expressing the desire to have another at the conclusion of the 1979 fair.

Balicki, Henry C. (19 Jan 1904 – 17 Sep 1978)

Henry C. Balicki, 74, a resident of Thorp, died on Sunday, September 17, 1978 of a heart attack at Southside public boat landing on Lake Eau Claire while loading his boat on the trailer.

Mr. Balicki, a retired farmer, was born January 19, 1904 at Chicago, Illinois. He was united in marriage November 22, 1940 at St. Fidelis Church, Chicago, to Anna Jurgelewicz, who preceded him in death. After moving from Chicago they farmed in rural Withee until July 1976, when he moved to the city of Thorp.

Surviving are three sons, Thomas Balicki, Schaumburg, Illinois, Henry Balicki, Jr., Chicago, Gerald Balicki of Marshfield; three daughters, Josephine Ricciotti of Lindenhurst, Illinois, Annette Balicki of Chicago, Gloria Ng(?) of Milwaukee; one brother, Malen Balicki of Thorp, and two sisters, Alvina Dodd of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Helen Milewski of Owen.

Funeral services were held at St. Hedwig’s Chapel, Wednesday, September 20, 1978, with Father William Buchman and Father John Puerner officiating at the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial was made in New St. Hedwig’s Cemetery, Thorp. Pallbearers were: Arthur Balicki, Elk Grove, Wisconsin, Daniel Balicki, Milwaukee, Joseph Zielinski, Thorp, John Wargolet, Thorp, Donald Rusch, Withee, and Arles Offord, Withee.

Friedenfels, Rita (18 Jan 1932 – 19 Sep 1978)

Mrs. Robert (Rita) Friedenfels, Route 3, Medford, died at 10:10 Tuesday, September 19, 1978 at Memorial Hospital, Medford.

Funeral services were held in her memory at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 22, 1978 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Bill Green officiating. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in the Township of Holway.

The pallbearers were Randolph Friedenfels, Richard Friedenfels, David Friedenfels, Richard Mercier, William Bulloch and Dennis Clark.

The Maurina Funeral Home in Abbotsford was in charge of arrangements, where a Parish Wake service was held at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday.

The former Rita Schwellenbach was born on January 18, 1932 in Neillsville. She lived in the Globe area of Clark County and graduated from Greenwood High School and Taylor County Normal School at Medford. She was a teacher at Hoard Center Grade School, Township of Hoard.

She married Robert Friedenfels on August 2, 1952 in Medford, and they farmed in the Town of Holway until 1969, when they moved to the Town of Hammel.

She was a member of Holy Rosary Church in Medford.

She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Miss Roxanne Friedenfels of Durham, N.C.; two sons, Randolph of River Falls, and Richard who is at home; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Schwellenbach of Medford.

Mr. and Mrs. John Greshner Sr. celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary last Friday, September 22, 1978 by taking a five day trip to the Black Hill, and then upon their return their family, son John and family, and grandchildren, held an anniversary party at Hoffman House in Wausau.

Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ted Kafka, Withee, and maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Mikkelson of La Crosse.

Baptism for Mary Kay Harwood, of Route 1, Spencer was held Sunday, September 24, 1978 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Unity during the morning service. Sponsors for Mary Kay were her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Seefeld of Spencer.

Following the baptismal a noon reception was held at the Harwood home. Attending were her grandmother Mrs. Guy Harwood of Owen, and many relatives and friends. A special cake was made by her sponsors for the occasion.

Bertha Combs celebrated her 90th birthday anniversary last Wednesday and Thursday with friends invited for afternoon lunch and birthday cake. Ladies Joining Mrs. Combs on Wednesday were Carrie Matthias, Ann Sorenson, An Halponen, Dana Johnson, Rose Knaack, Lillian Koplitz, Elsa Laube, Pearl Lokken Minnie Laube and Mrs. Combs’ daughter, Yvonne Borgeson.

Barker, Myrtle (1889? – 18 Sep 1978)

Dr. Myrtle E. Barker of the first teachers of the Owen High School, passed away September 18, 1978 at Monrovia, California at the age of 89.

Dr. Barker taught in Owen in 1912 under the principalship of Mr. Mygaard. Some of the first graduates remember her well.

Miss Barker made her home in Owen with her sister, Mrs. Fred Griebenow.

Dr. Barker’s professional career began in 1908 following graduation from Stevens Point Wisconsin Normal School. The BS degree was obtained at the University of Chicago in 1916, and then she began a live devoted to the field of Health Education.

A scholarship awarded by the American Child Health Association in 1923 provided an opportunity for Dr. Barker to study for an M.S. degree.

Following several years on the faculty at Wittenberg College, Ohio, Dr. Barker obtained a doctorate at Columbia University, New York.

Twenty years at St. Cloud College, Minnesota were devoted to the development of a Health Education Curriculum. Dr. Barker retired in 1956 and lived in Redlands from 1959 until 1975, when she moved to Sierra Madre to take up residence with a niece, Mrs. J. L. Hansford.

Interment after cremation will be made in East Cemetery, Westfield, Wisconsin, her birth place.

Mr. and Mrs. Allan Jensen of Houston, Texas are the parents of a baby boy, Jordan Matthew, born on September 27, 1978, weighing 8 pounds, 2 ounces, and was 20 ¼ inches in length. Mrs. Jensen is the former Cindy Mohr.

Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Earl Jensen and maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Mohr.

Cheryl is a 1977 graduate of Owen-Withee High School and is presently enrolled at City College of Cosmetology in Eau Claire. Mr. Koehn is employed by Packerland Packing Company at Chippewa Falls.
