Magdalena "Maggie" Lasiuk, 93, Thorp, died on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Oakbrook Health & Rehab, Thorp. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb/ 26, at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Thorp. The Rev. John Puerner officiated. Burial was in St. Hedwig’s Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

 

Magdalene Lato was born on Jan. 28, 1909, in Poland, to Vincent and Bridget (nee Wozniak) Lato. At the age of 16, she immigrated to the United States with her mother and sister and settled on the family farm south of Thorp. She married John Abramczak on Aug. 27, 1927, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Thorp. They operated the family dairy farm until he died on Oct. 5, 1957. She married Stanley Lasiuk on Nov. 5, 1960 at St. Hedwig’s Chapel, Thorp. They lived in the Thorp area until he died on May 17, 1967. She lived at Morgan Plaza, Thorp, from 1990-99, when she moved to Oakbrook Health & Rehab, where she resided until her death. She was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Parish Council of Catholic Women and Thorp American Legion Auxiliary.

 

Survivors include one daughter, Helen (Ralph) Niemiec, Willard; one daughter-in-law, Betty Benzschawel, Thorp; 45 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

 

Preceding her in death were her parents; her two husbands; one son, Chester Abramczak; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers and two sisters.

 

The Thorp Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
