Hughes, James Edward (26 January 1875 - 22 April 1961)

 

A requiem high Mass was read Tuesday morning in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Neillsville, for James Hughes, 86, Rt. 2 Granton, who died in Neillsville Saturday following an illness of three months. The Rev. Fr. Joseph Eisenmann officiated. Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.  A general rosary service was said Monday evening at the Bergemann Funeral Home.

 

James Edward Hughes, son of the late William and Hannah (Collins) Hughes, was born January 26, 1875, in the Town of Grant.  His education was received in the Kurth School and St. Mary’s Parochial School in Neillsville. As a young man he worked in logging camps.

 

In 1908 he returned to the Town of Grant where he started to farm, living there since that time.

 

He served on the Kurth School board for a number of years and belonged to various farm organizations.  He also was town treasurer for the Town of Grant for several years.

 

On August 16, 1911, he was married to Nettie (Counsell) Short at Neillsville. She died January 23rd.

 

Mr. Hughes is survived by a son, Donald, of Rt. 2, Granton, and a daughter, Mrs. James (Aileen) Wheatley, Mentor, O. Two step-children, Eugene Short and Mrs. William (Helen) Vine, both of Granton, also survive.  Other survivors include 10 grandchildren: 12 great-grandchildren; and the following brothers and sister: John Hughes, Chippewa Falls; Mike and Archie Hughes, Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada; and Mrs. Margaret Murphy of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

 

Pallbearers were: Dennis, John, Jr. and Phillip Hughes and Dale, Floyd and Glenn Short.

 

Out of town people here for the service were:  Mrs. James Wheatley, Mentor, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Short, Mr. and Mrs. William Vine, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Short, Wayne and Lorraine Short, Mary and Mike Hughes, Granton; Mr. and Mrs. Alan Linster, Amy and David, Plymouth; Bettie and Bonnie Hughes, and William Wagner, Madison; Mr. and Mrs. John Hughes, Sr., and Clark Hughes, Chippewa Falls; John Hughes Jr., Milwaukee; Dennis Hughes, Frankfort, S. D.; Phillip Hughes, St. Paul, Minn.; Ernest Vine, Gordon Vine, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Bartz, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Garbisch, Granton; Mr. and Mrs. Donald Drescher, Greenwood.
