Mitte, Robert #3 (1 Jan 1858 - 7 Feb 1914)

It was like a shock to his friends and neighbors when they received the news of Robert Mitte’s death as on Saturday morning he left his home in company with his brother Wm. and walked to the woods to work about a mile and a half distant, and before noon it was learned that he had passed away.

One of the trees in falling stuck him, catching him between that and a log crushing his leg.  His brother ran to Paul Hagedorn’s for help, a distance of about three quarters of a mile.  Paul and Ernest Hemp drove to the woods as fast as possible and took him to the home of his brother where two doctors were immediately summoned, but medical aid was of no avail for life was extinct, and almost before he was taken from the woods, the scene of his fatal accident, he had passed to the great beyond.  Death being due to the loss of blood which he suffered alone in the woods while friends were coming to his assistance; the cause of the accident undoubtedly being his failing eyesight, for Wm. called to him to run as he saw the tree start to swing.  In doing so, Robt. fell over a log and before he could get up the tree struck him.

Robert Mitte was born in Germany and came to this country thirty-one years ago; he had attained the age of 56 years, 1 month, and 7 days, was unmarried and made his home with his brother and family.  He was an industrious and respected citizen and well liked by all who knew him.  Besides his brother Wm. and family, his only near relatives residing here, he leaves a host of friends to mourn his sudden departure.  The funeral was held Tuesday at two o’clock at the church here and the remains laid to rest in the Globe Cemetery.

To the bereaved brother and family, we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
