Biography--from family records

Although he was a married man, Chauncey K. Richardson fought with the 12th Wis. Infantry to free the slaves and to save the union.  He'd married Amanda Tyler in 1862 and once the Civil War ended, he returned to her.  Together, they raised three children, Verna, Victor, and Vinton.  They moved from New Port, Columbia County to make their home in Strong's Prairie, Adams County.

In 1875, when a 24 ft. high, two story 30' x 50' frame schoolhouse was constructed in Spencer Wis., Chauncey K. Richardson  became the town's very first teacher for the upper grades.  It was just a fledgling community, with a new mill built by James L. Robinson and the Richardson's wanted to help make it a real town.  Since everyone was busy farming that summer, the school was not quite finished in time for the first session, so Amanda offered the Richardson home as a temporary classroom for the primary grades.  She and Jennie Patch, who was in charge of the primary grades, taught their young scholars to read and write.  In 1881 the six-year-old school burned the ground during Christmas vacation.  The upper classes temporarily occupied the hall above John Gardiner's store and the Methodist Church.  The younger students were moved to a private home.  (see the map below)

The 1880 Federal Census Report shows that Amanda's thirty-two year old younger sister (Roxy C. Tyler) was living with the family and she too was a school teacher.  That same year, Grandma Tyler (nee Emogene Cass Todd) moved from her home in New Haven, Adams Co., Wisconsin to join the Richardson's family.  Grandpa Amos Tyler had died in 1878.  Two housekeepers, Lennia Danforth, the English born Sarah Allchurch were also living in the home. A young minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Wilbur Eugene Dennett, also lived with the Richardsons in 1880 and in 1881 married Roxy in Hillsdale, Hillsdale, Michigan.

Along with his teaching, Chauncey also served the community as a public officer in non-contentious matters concerning estates, deeds and powers-of-attorney. As public notary he would have been called on to administer oaths and affirmations, take affidavits and statutory declarations, witness and authenticate the execution of certain classes of documents, take acknowledgments of deeds and other conveyances, protest notes and bills of exchange.  It has also been said that he served as Justice of the Peace too.  In 1877 when the first town meeting was held, Chauncey was one of the acting inspectors when 157 citizens cast their votes.

Mrs. C. K. Richarson (Amanda) opened a clothing store on Main Street, in the foremost part of their home.

In later years, after Amanda's mother moved in with the family, the Richardson's daughter, Verna took over the business of dressmaking and millenary. Verna also taught music and participated in numerous musicals and literary events.

Mrs. Richardson's place of business is the center of attraction just now, in consequence of the wonderfully cheap Laces she is now offering to the ladies of Spencer.  From two to twelve yards of perfect lace, put up in packages for only ten cents a package.  We have tried to figure out the description of these goods and we got it something like this: double geared, reversible, high pressure, everlasting blond--but pshaw, we've got it all mixed up--go and see how it is yourself.  There is no humbug about it.
