King, Richard (3 AUG 1932 - 7 MAR 1941)

The sorrow that can mark only a tragic death came to relatives and many friends here and at Alma Center, when a message was received that Richard King had been injured at his new home in Menasha, when returning from school last Thursday afternoon, and succumbed to the injuries some hours later.  The accident happened very near his home, but was not witnessed by members of the family.

The accident happened at a street intersection where a city bus had stopped to discharge a passenger.  A group of boys of about Richard’s age on their way home were playing and snow balling each other.  The boys in their play dashed over a snow bank at the side of the street, not thinking about traffic, and were hidden from the view of an approaching motorist by the bus.  Richie seemed ordained to be the victim.

Richie was taken at once to a hospital where examination disclosed a skull fracture, internal injuries, and also leg injuries.  He died early Friday morning without regaining consciousness, about fourteen hour after the accident.

A coroner’s inquest was held Saturday afternoon, and a verdict of accidental death was rendered.  The driver of the car risked his own life and that of a young lady riding with him in attempting to avoid striking the children.  The car overturned as brakes were applied and it swerved into a snow bank.  The two in the car, and the children playing with Richie were uninjured.

Little Richard, only son of Paul I. and Karoline (Mohl) King, was born in Humbird (Clark Co., Wis.), Aug. 8, 1932, and died at Menasha, Friday morning, Mar. 7, 1941, being 7 months past eight years of age.  His father died six years ago, and in the fall of 1939 he went to Menasha, upon his mother’s marriage with Mr. Graner, and was a pupil in the third grade in one of the schools in that city.

Mourning his tragic and untimely death are his mother and step-father, his older sister, Charlotte King, and a baby half-sister, Rosemarie Graner, besides numerous other relatives.

Funeral services were held at the funeral home, and at Trinity Lutheran Church in Menasha Monday afternoon, the Rev. Paul G. Bergmann, pastor of the church, officiating.  The casket was place in a vault in Oak Hill Cemetery, Menasha, temporarily and later the remains will be brought here for burial beside those of his father in Mentor Cemetery.

Those going from here and Alma Center to attend the services were Mrs. R.M. Russell, Mrs. C.P. Olson, Mrs. I.C. Sobczak, Miss Sophia Schlegel, J. Cadby driving.
