Stevens, Ernest Louis (22 August 1923 - 29 April 2011) With Flag

Ernest Louis Stevens, 87, of rural Humbird died Friday, April 29, 2011, at his home.

Ernest was born Aug. 22, 1923, to Louis and Rose (Young) Stevens on the family farm.  After his years at the Humbird School, he traveled to Montana where he worked on a ranch and for the railroad until being drafted into the U. S. Army for World War II.  He served in General George Patton’s 3rd Army in the European Theatre of Action, landing in France on D-Day.  Ernest received an honorable discharge after being injured. Returning to Humbird, he drove school bus for several years, when he met his wonderful wife of 62 years Grace P. (Johnson) Stevens. After being married June 12, 1948, in Spooner, they made their home in Humbird. The couple had a daughter Erma Kay, who passed away in 1965 after two years of life.

Ernest and Grace farmed for many years, and he started Stevens Trucking, where he hauled cattle, machinery and other items.  He worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier until retiring in 1987.

His passion in life was steam engines, tractors and horses.  He loved to visit, tell stories and attend auctions. Ernest was a member of Melcher-Matti American Legion Post #320 and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his wife, Grace, of Humbird and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, parents and siblings.

Graveside services were held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2011 at Mentor Cemetery in rural Humbird, with visitation from 10 a.m. until noon at Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home in Hixton.
