Putman, Russell #3 (26 OCT 1880 - 3 NOV 1943)

Russell Henry Putman, son of John and Amanda Putman, passed away Nov. 3, 1943, at 5:30 a.m. at the Krohn Hospital, Black River Falls, attaining the age of 63 years and 7 days.  He had been in failing health the last four years and was confined to the hospital ten days previous to his death.

Mr. Putman was born at Augusta, Wis., Oct. 26, 1880.  He spent his young manhood on the farm with his parents, east of this village (Humbird, Clark Co., Wis.), and on Nov. 19, 1913, he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Trader of this village.  Their home was on the home farm, which he operated successfully, retiring four years ago due to failing health.  Since that time their home has been in Humbird.

He was always an active worker and continued his activities, even during the past summer when quite ill.  Seven years ago he was chosen a member of the town board of supervisors, a position in which he served most efficiently until the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anna Putman, and three sons: Willard, residing on the home farm, and Melvin and Arthur, in the armed forces.  Surviving also are two sisters: Mrs. Peter O’Leary of this village, and Mrs. Luzi Schneller of Two Rivers.  There is also one grandson and numerous nieces and nephews.  One son and one daughter preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Saturday afternoon and were attended by many sorrowing relatives and friends.  The Rev. Floyd A. Fahlgren, pastor of the Neillsville Methodist Church, a former pastor of the local church, preached the sermon, using as the text, "There is but a step between me and death, from I Samuel 20:3.  Mrs. Waters, Mrs. Smith, and W.F. Hein sang three selections: "Home of the Soul," "Under His Wing," and "Abide with Me."  Pallbearers were John Michael, M. Kretschmer, A.E. Fradenburg, L.G. Laffe, A.W. Short, and W.E. Waters.  Burial was in Mentor Cemetery.

Those attending from away were: Mr. and Mrs. I.V. Putman, Miss Marguerite Putman, Mrs. Gordon Lamb, Janesville; Mrs. Glen McSchooler, Omro; John Putman, Borth; Mrs. Glen Bohl, Reedsburg; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. O’Leary, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Begley, Neillsville; Mrs. Rose Boettcher, Frank Washburn, Jos. Rickard, Augusta; Jos. Trader, Mrs. Alfred Gessner and daughter Fern, Chippewa Falls; Mrs. Arthur L.
