Field, George (21 APR 1866 - 7 APR 1944)

From Millston correspondence in Banner Journal:

"Our community was both shocked and saddened when it was learned on Friday that Geo. Field had passed away without a warning during the night.

George Field was born April 21, 1866, and passed on to the Great Beyond, April 7, 1944.  He resided in Millston twenty-eight years.  His beloved wife, Elsie Vera (Russell), preceded him in death Sept. 21, 1927.  After retiring from the railroad in later years he lived alone, close to his friends and relatives.

He was an outstanding citizen of the town, and was greatly admired by all who knew him.  He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, Merrillan No. 246, and received the honorary 50 years badge several years ago.

Funeral services were held at the village chapel Monday afternoon, Rev. Huss officiating, and were attended by a large concourse of friends to pay tribute to one who had lived so long among them.  There was a profusion of flowers, showering the esteem in which he was held.

He is survived by six children: Howard Field and Mrs. Edward Bunde of Millston; Mrs. Alfred Jay of Minneapolis; Carrol Field of Racine; Mrs. Walter Johnson of Black River Falls; and Cpl. Donald Field of West Palm Beach, Fla.  All were present at the funeral and mourn the loss of a kind and loving father.  They have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.

He was laid to rest in Brookside Cemetery."

Deceased was a former resident of this village (Humbird, Clark Co., Wis.).  He was employed on the section for quite a number of year, and when promoted to foreman he was assigned to the section at Millston, which position he held until his retirement.

In his earlier life Mr. Field followed the logging and lumbering operations in Bruce Mound vicinity.  He was one of Trow’s foremen when the logging camps were in their heyday around the Mound and Dells Dam.
