Crandell, George W. #2 (13 DEC 1857 - 7 JUN 1946)

Death came to a former prominent citizen of Humbird (Clark Co., Wis.), when George W. Crandell passed to the Great Beyond at his home in Antigo, June 7, 1946, after failing health for a number of years, at the age of 88 years, 5 months and 24 days.

He was one of a family of eleven children born to Chester and Annabelle (Hart) Crandell, two of whom survive.  His birthplace was in the province of Ontario, Canada, on Dec. 13, 1857.  The family came to Sheboygan County, Wis. in ’61, remaining there a number of years.  George Crandell and Miss Ida Evaline Albright of Fond du Lac, were married in Greenbush on Aug. 31, 1876, and lived on a farm there until coming to Humbird, where his parents had come a few years before.

They lived on the farm now owned by Edwin Barkley, and about 1884 bought the store and building where F.A. Tritsch is now located, of Isaac Cross.  Mr. Crandell operated this store until 1901.  During those years he was active in many different lines.  He engaged extensively in logging and lumbering.  He completed the erection of the town hall when the contractor failed on the job.  He was instrumental in building the Methodist Church and was one of trustees and main supporting members until moving away.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Crandell sang in the church choir here for a period of years, and also in the Antigo church.  His crew of woodsmen, under his direction, planted several rows of the fine elm trees along our streets.  He was an active member of the local Masonic Lodge and one of its past masters.

In 1901, Mr. Crandell sold the store and his other interests here, and he and Mrs. Crandell moved to Antigo, where he engaged in the real estate and insurance businesses.  He was a progressive citizen of that city until advancing years brought his retirement.

The happy family union of sixty-seven years was broken by the death of Mrs. Crandell on May 27, 1943.  Her sister, mrs. Amy Hull, who had been with them for a number of years, remained and kept the home for the aged husband until his death.

Burial services were held Monday, June 10, and the interment was in the Antigo Cemetery.
