Harry C. Meinhardt, 90, Greenwood, left this earth on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at the Neillsville Retirement Community, following a courageous battle with cancer. At his request, there will be no services.

Harry Charles Meinhardt was born on April 25, 1921, in Greenwood, to Otto and Marie (Nee Sundermeyer) Meinhardt, He was raised on the family farm, which he purchased in 1953. In his early years, he helped his parents on the farm and attended Rocky Rim School, and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1940. As a young boy, his first sight of an airplane in the sky grew into a lifelong interest in planes. After high school, he farmed north of Greenwood with his brother, Elmer, for four years, and earned extra money harvesting crops in the Dakotas. In 1945, he was in the U.S. Marine Corps, stationed throughout the East Coast. Upon his honorable discharge from the service, he worked for a sign company in Wisconsin and Ohio. On Oct. 14, 1953, he married Irmgard Schilm at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Greenwood. After their marriage, they operated the family farm for 31 years and he drove school bus for the Greenwood School for 12 years. In 1984, the farm was sold and they moved to an apartment in Greenwood. He enjoyed fishing, especially at the cabin with his family, and hunting deer and squirrels with family and friends. His sharp mind and knowledge came from reading everything possible.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Irmgard, Greenwood; one son, Charles (Phyllis) Meinhardt, Greenwood; one daughter, Linda (Kenny) Richards, Pace, Fla.; a granddaughter, Kara (Jacob) Lightfoot, Marshfield; a grandson, Travis (Victoria) Graves, Lakewood, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Vera Meinhardt, Marshfield, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Elmer Meinhardt and Clarence Meinhardt.

Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home, Marshfield, assisted the family with arrangements.
