Staples, Anna Lee (18 March 1890 - 25 August 1965)

 

Residents of Merrillan were grieved to learn of the death of Mrs. De Van Staples August 25.  Mrs. Staples, 75, died at her home in Merrillan following a heart attack.  She had been ill with arthritis a number of years and in recent years was confined to her home.

 

Anna Lee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Lee was born in Merrillan, March 18, 1890.  She received her education in the Merrillan schools.

 

Mrs. Staples was an active member of the Merrillan Methodist Church over 50 years, serving both the Ladies Aid and W. S. C. S.  She was a member of the Social Benevolent Society, Study club, and the Order of the Eastern Star.

 

She and her husband purchased the Merrillan Hardware Store in 1947, which she helped her husband operate until she was forced to retire because of ill health.

 

In addition to her husband, De Van, she is survived by: two sons, Lawrence Larson of Atlanta, Ga., and James, Rockford, Ill.; three daughters, Mrs. George (Dorothy) Burmester of Greenwood, Mrs. Alton (Ethel) Hagen of Strum and Mrs. Glen (Frances) Ketchum of Stoughton; two step-sons, John Staples of Marcola, Ore., and Carl Staples of Milwaukee; two brothers, William Lee of Delavan, and George Lee of Dallas, Tex., three sisters, Mrs. Les Brownell of Ely, Minn., Mrs. Phil LaTrenier and Mis Eda Lee, both of International Falls, Minn.; 22 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

 

Eastern Star services were held at Jensen’s Funeral Home in Hixton Friday, August 27.  The Rev. Calvin W. Carey officiated at services held from the Merrillan Methodist Church at 2 p.m. the following day.  Burial was made in Oakwood Cemetery at Merrillan.
