Genett, Eliza (02 MAR 1850 - 14 AUG 1941)

Aged Lady Passes Away Last Thursday

Had Celebrated Her 91st Birthday March 2, 1941; Over One Hundred Descendants Survive Her.

In the death of Mrs. Eliza Genett on Thursday, August 14, 1941, at 5:30 p.m., Spencer lost one of its oldest pioneer residents.  For sixty-six years Mrs. Genett had made her home in Spencer and the immediate vicinity.  Grandma Genett was known and respected by all who have made their home in the village and surrounding community.

Eliza Phelps was born in Pillar Point, N Y., March 2, 1850.  While still small child she came to Wisconsin with her parents.  They settled in Janesville and later moved to DePere.  On August 16, 1886 she was married to Jefferson Genett, a Civil War veteran.  In the spring of 1875 they came to Spencer where Mr. Genett was engaged in milling.  For a time he operated a barber shop and a hotel under the name of the Spencer House.  Later they took up a homestead about five miles east of Spencer here they lived until 1892 when they purchased a farm a half mile south of Spencer.  In 1919 they moved into the village where Mr. Genett died about twelve years ago.

Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Genett, seven of whom survive her.  One daughter, Mrs. Bertha Harris, died August 13, 1940; a son Jefferson Jr., was killed in an accident on Nov. 14, 1940, and three children died in infancy.  Her surviving children are Mrs. Alice Boodry of Wenachee, Wash.; Mrs. Pearl Lamp, Oswego, Ill.; Charles Genett, William Genett, Mrs. Effie Ringer, Frank Genett, and Mrs. Elmira Mitchell all of Spencer.  She is also survived by thirty grandchildren, sixty-eight great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren, making a total of one hundred nine living descendants.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, August 17, 1941, at 2:15 from the Swarthout Funeral Home and at 2:30 from the Spencer Methodist church, Rev. J. Ellery Beale officiating.  Burial was in the Spencer cemetery.  Pall bearers were Bert Andrews, Laurence Driscoll, Frank C. Corbett, A. E. Messer, George Hayward, and R. L. Parette.  The many beautiful floral offerings were carried by Laura Martin, Anna Clark, May Hayward, Mae Driscoll, Ora Schaeffer, and Anna Fritsch.

For many years Grandma Genett, as she was familiarly known, was active in community affairs.  For the last two years she had been confined to her bed, but she was cheerful throughout all of her suffering and enjoyed having her relatives and friends drop in to visit with her.  Out of town relatives and old friends who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Phelps, Evansville, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Genett, Jr., Milton Junction, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Harry B. Kugler and daughters, Louise and Wanda, Yorkshire, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Martin and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Martin, DePere, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rossman, Loyal and Mrs. Gust Scheibe, son and daughter, Marshfield.
