Ide, Betsy J. (1826 - 13 FEB 1917)

Once more the silent messenger has visited us and summoned a beloved mother to that mysterious County where during countless ages untold millions have gone before her, and from whose bounds no traveler returns.

This one to respond to the summons this time was Betsy Jane Nye Ide, better known as "Grandma Ide."  The decedent was a native of Vermont, having been born in Westford, Vt., a daughter of Zenas and Katie Nye, in 1826.  She comes of English parents who were married in Connecticut and moved to Vermont with an ox team and wagon, had the distinction of bringing to that township in Vermont the first wagon.  Deceased was one of fifteen children born to those parents, one of a pair of twin girls.  Out of these fifteen children it is  a notable fact that when the youngest of them was 40 years of age, fourteen of them were living; the other died in infancy and was of a pair of twins next older than Mrs. Ide.  With the death of Mrs. Ide Tuesday only one of these 15 survive and she, her sister Hannah, of Essex, Vermont, now a woman of 80 years.

Betsy Jane Nye was married to Wm. B. Ide in St. Lawrence County, N.Y., in October of 1844.  To them were born three children. Truman Henry Cassius and Abbie Jane, all of whom survive their parents.  Mr. Ide died in New York State in the early 70’s. Cassius Ide came here in Aug. of 1873 and bought the NE SE, 27 and 25, ½ W., the 40 just north of where he now lives and erected a log house he ever saw built, and which said house stood and endured until consumed by fire only 3 months ago..  Here his mother, his brother and sister joined him in Nov. of 1873 and took up residence.  Cassius bought the Chris Ebbe place, joining him on the south in the fall of 1900 when he was married and after the death of his wife in the spring of 1904 his mother and sister left the old log house on the north 40 and took up residence with him in the new home which was yet in sight of the old one.  Here Grandma Ide continued until her death Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 13, 1917.  Her death resulted from La Grippe and advanced age.  She was 91 years of age and was only sick since last Saturday noon.  Her son Truman Henry lives at Salem, Oregon, whither he moved in the spring of 1904.

Deceased was a woman of great industry, one who was thoroughly honest and conscientious in all her undertakings and who leaves to her children the memory of a noble mother whose life was well and honestly spent.  The funeral was held from the home yesterday, Thursday afternoon.  Rev. Geo. Crow, the M.E. pastor officiated.  Interment was made in the Windfall Cemetery.  The pallbearers were Home King, Frant Osgood, Noble Downer and W.P. Budge, Fisk Lee and Hank Pietenpol.
