McPherson, Alice (07 SEPT 1958)

A wedding of interest to friends in Loyal was solemnized in the First Methodist Church, Litchfield, Illinois on Sunday afternoon, September 7th

The bride’s maternal grandparents are O. D. Poulton and the late Mrs. O. D. Poulton, former Loyal residents. Her paternal grandmother was the late Mrs. Stena Lyle Rossman. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Douglas McPherson, both former Loyal residents, and the bride, Miss Alice McPherson has also been a resident of Loyal and spent many summers here with her grandparents.

Dr. W. N. Grandy, dean of McKendree College, Lebanon, Ill., received the vows of the double ring ceremony uniting Miss McPherson and Rev. James W. Hauan, before an altar flanked on either side by large floor vases of white chrysanthemums and gladioli and softly lighted by cathedral candles. Large white satin bows ornamented each candelabrum & marked each pew.

Preceding the ceremony, the bride’s sister, Mrs. Hobart Sailor of Zion, Illinois, presented an organ recital and used the Lohengrin and Mendelsohn wedding marches for the processional and recessional.

Miss Marsha Harmon, soloist, sang "O Gracious Father of Mankind" and "o Perfect Love."

The bride, given in marriage by her father, chose her former roommate at Garrett Biblical Institute, Mrs. Lawrence Thompson of Chicago, for her matron of honor and Miss Nancy Brubaker of Litchfield as junior bridesmaid.

Rev. Hauan, son of Mrs. Maeda Hauan and the Late William Hauan, of Minneapolis, had his brother, William C. Hauan, also of Minneapolis as best Man.

Miss Betty Brubaker, of Litchfield, lighted the candles and Hobart Sailor of Zion, Illinois, brother-in-law of the bride, and William C. Hauan were ushers.

The bride in the wedding gown of her sister Mrs. Sailor, the former Leah McPherson wore imported chantilly lace combined with nylon tulle over gleaming white satin. Fashioned with an Elizabethan collar and yoke of illusion, it had a molded bodice and long pointed sleeves with tiny buttons held tight at the wrists. The voluminous skirt over tulle which was held wide by hoops, cascaded into a chapel train. Her finger tipped veil of frothy illusion was secured by a crown of seed pearls and sequins. She carried a white Bible, the gift of her grandfather, O. D. Poulton and Mrs. Poulton, on which rested a white purple throated orchid.

The bride’s attendants wore waltz length taffeta gowns. The matron of honor was in mauve taffeta with unusually full skirt, and slim bodice was overlaid with French lace. Her headpiece was of palepink carnations and frothy ribbon. The junior bridesmaid wore a soft green taffeta, accented by a deeper green cumberbund which formed a large bow at the Back and tapered to a point caught at the hemline of the scalloped skirt. Each carried a colonial bouquet of pale pink carnations. Miss Betty Brubaker, the candle lighter, wore a gown identical to that of her sister, the junior bridesmaid, and a wrist corsage of pale pink carnations.

For her daughter’s wedding Mrs. McPherson wore lace over taffeta in Mississippi brown shade, with matching accessories & a yellow pom pom corsage. Mrs. Hauan, mother of the groom, chose navy blue taffeta dress with white accessories and a white carnation corsage.

At the reception in the social room of the church, the bride’s table was laid in pale pink with white satin band through the center and huge bows accented with ferns at each corner. The table was centered by a four tiered wedding cake topped with a wedding bell and wreathed with roses. Painted daisies and white pom-poms between lighted tapers were at either side of the cake.

Former classmates and other friends served the cake and punch and acted as hostesses at the reception.

The former Miss McPherson is a graduate of McKendree College, Lebanon, Illinois, and is now completing work on her masters degree in Religious Education At Garrett Biblical Institute and Northwestern University of Evanston, Illinois.

Rev. Hauan is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and received his bachelor of divinity degree from Garrett Biblical Institute. He was ordained Elder in the Methodist Church at the Minnesota Conference on June 15th of this year and is now associate pastor of Centenary Methodist Church at Mankato, Minnesota, and associate director of the Wesley Foundation at Mankato State College.

Following a brief wedding trip the couple will be at home at 817 S. Second Street, Mankato, Minn.

Dr. Grandy, the officiating minister at the wedding is a former pastor of the Loyal Methodist Church and officiated at the wedding of the bride’s parents in Loyal 25 years ago and at the wedding of the bride’s sister in Litchfield 3 years ago.
