Buechel, Chares “Bud” (Service Retired - 1985)

Charles “Bud” Buechel, Town of Levis, recently retired from the Army National Guard. He had nearly 25 years relationship with various branches of the military.

Buechel served six years in the U.S. Navy during World War II, followed by six years in the U.S. Air Force Reserves in the 1960s. He joined the Wisconsin National Guard in 1974 and served as First Sergeant in a White Fish Bay artillery unit.

He has won many medals and honors during those military stints. These include four battle stars, the Philippine Liberation with one battle star, Good Conduct, World War II Victory, American Defense. the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. Upon retirement he received more certificates and awards, including a statue of a Minute Man for his efforts in recruiting others into the Guard.

Buechel, as a Guardsman, was called to active duty three times. Those efforts meant work as a prison guard and a fireman in Milwaukee.

Grade, Douglas (Military Notes - 1985)

Douglas Grade, son of Douglas and France Grade, 315 West St., Neillsville, was involved in a NATO-Sponsored exercise by participating in the U.S. Army’s return of forces to Germany (REFORGER), 1985. Spec. 4 Grade, a 1980 graduate of Neillsville High School, is a Chinook crew chief with the U.S. Military Community Activity in Mannheim, West Germany.

Bradley Kopp, son of Theodore and Mary Kopp, Rt. 2 Neillsville, has completed recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Center, San Diego. Navy Fireman Recruit Kopp is a 1984 graduate of Neillsville High School.

Kuehl, James (Military Notes - 1985)

James Kuehl, son of James and Lois Kuehl, Rt. 2 Neillsville, has been appointed a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He is a weapon control systems mechanic at Nellis AFB, Nevada, with the 57th Aircraft General Squadron. His wife, Dawn, is the daughter of Gene Huth, Rt. 2 Granton. James is a 1981 graduate of Neillsville High School.

Colette Prochnow, daughter of Barbara Pugilese of Garden Grove, California, and Richard Prochnow of Rt. 1 Neillsville, has been promoted to the rank of senior airman. She is an electrician at Keesler AFB, Mississippi, with the 3380th Civil Engineering Squadron.

Schwarze, Lynn (Military Notes - 1985)

Lynn Schwarze, son of Orlin and Bernice Schwarze, Greenwood, is a crew member aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Texas, home ported in San Diego. The ship, along with 69 others in the Third and Seventh Fleets, recently participated in a Pacific exercise. Navy Chief Petty Officer Schwarze is a 1964 graduate of Greenwood High School and has been with the Navy for 18 years.

Stiglich, Michael (Military Notes - 1985)

Michael Stiglich, son of Veronica Stiglich, Rt. 1 Granton, has arrived for duty at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Army Pvt. Stiglich is an infantryman with the 82nd Airborne Division. A 1984 graduate of Granton High School, Stiglich was previously assigned to Fort Benning, Georgia.

Jon Stokka, son of the Rev. Maynard and Lorraine Stokka, Rt. 1, Granton, has completed the U.S. Air Force military indoctrination for medical services officers at Sheppard AFB, Texas. Lt. Stokka will join his wife at the Air Force center at Fairfield. He is a 1980 graduate of St. Olaf College, St. Peter, Minnesota.

Stokka, Mary (Military Notes - 1985)

Mary Stokka, daughter of Joe and Darlene Weis, Rochester, Minnesota, has completed the U.S. Air Force military indoctrination for medical service officers at Sheppard AFB, Texas. Lt. Stokka is scheduled to serve with the David Grant Air Force Medican Center at Fairfield, California. She is a 1980 graduate of Mankato State.

Bugar, Alvin (23 Dec 1922 – 10 Dec 2013)

Alvin "Al" Bugar, 90, of Eau Claire died on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at Dove Healthcare-West.

He was born on December 23, 1922, to Ignatius and Gisela (Fitzel) Bugar in Colby, WI. He was known affectionately as Turkey Al by friends and family. He was most proud of being called Dad and Grandpa. Al was loved and respected by his family and friends and admired for his undying passion for living life to its fullest even at his advanced age.

He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman as well as storyteller. He will be missed by all who knew him and envied his positive outlook on life.

He took great pride in being a World War II Veteran.

He is survived by his son, Scott (Karen) Bugar; two daughters, Vickie (Bill) Schmidt and Sandra (Emmo) Smid; four grandchildren, Sarah Bugar, Seth Bugar, Lori Keech and Lisa Schmidt; one brother, Don; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carolyn; his son, Alan; six brothers, Raymond, Ignatius, Joseph, Leo, Robert, and Paul; and one sister, Helen McGuire.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 20, 2013, at Smith Funeral Chapel at 12:00 p.m. with Fr. Don Meuret officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be held in Loyal, WI at St. Anthony's Cemetery.
