Obituary of Hugh Shanks

Mention was made in our columns a few weeks ago that Mr. John Shanks of Greenwood, was called to Castlewood, South Dakota, by the failing health of his father, Hugh Shanks, Esq., an old resident of Clark County. On arriving at Castlewood he found his father failing, and after a few days determined to return to Clark County with him, and arrived at Greenwood on the 13th of August. On his way back he stopped over at La Crosse to consult with Dr. Frank Powell and was informed that his father was afflicted with a cancer in the stomach, and that there was no help for him. After their arrival at Greenwood, Mr. Shanks failed rapidly until Wednesday morning, Sept. 3, 1884, when he died.

He leaves nine children, seven sons and two daughters, six of whom, five sons and one daughter are living in Clark County. His wife died at Greenwood six years ago. He has been a resident of Clark county about eleven years. His funeral occurred on last Thursday from the M.E. Church at Greenwood, Rev. Borgers officiating. He being an old resident and having many friends and acquaintances his funeral was largely attended.
