DEATH OF JONES TOMPKINS

From Greenwood Gleaner the and from the scrapbook of Mrs. Andrews, former librarian of The Greenwood Public Library, Greenwood, Wisconsin.

Jones Tompkins, one of the oldest and best known residents of the county, was stricken with paralysis and died at his home six miles south of Greenwood, Sunday morning, October 13, 1895. He was transacting business here in town on Saturday and seemed to be enjoying better health than usual. Mr. Tompkins was born in the town of Stillwater, Saratoga Co. N.Y., June 2, 1826 and was therefore at the time of his death 69 years, 4 months, and 14 days of age. Deceased came to Clark county in 1862 and in the spring of 1866 settled on his present farm of 640 acres. Then covered with a heavy growth of hardwood timber, but now the finest and most beautiful farm in the county. He always took a leading part in town affairs and was chairman of the county Board of Supervisors for several years. During Cleveland's first administration he was postmaster at Greenwood. A wife and one son, James E. of Eaton are left to mourn his loss. The funeral was held at the Methodist Church in this city at 11 a.m., Wednesday Rev. Geo. C. Andrews delivering the discourse. A very large attendance of friends from home and abroad testified to the high place he held in the heart of the people. The procession over half a mile in length was proceeded by a band playing a funeral dirge.

The pallbearers selected from among his friends of the early days in the county were: Jas. Hewitt. W. H. Mead, B. F. Thompson, Geo. Huntsicker, Sen. Robt. Schofield and Henry Huntsicker.
