JACOB JOHN VOLK.
 

Jacob Volk, the senior member of the firm of Volk Brothers, merchant, tailors, was taken sick with typhoid fever a few weeks ago. It was not thought to be a serious case and his recovery was fully expected. The fever had left him but in his weakened condition he fell an easy prey to heart failure, which took him suddenly, causing his death.

Jacob John Volk was born at Amorchbach, Bayern, Germany, April 20, 1866. He was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. John Volk.

He came to America with his brother Joe in May, 1885 and went to work at the tailor trade in Milwaukee. He worked there until 1888, when he went to Merrill and went into business for himself, remaining there until 1891 at Manitowoc to Anna B. Galmbacher of that city.

They moved to Marshfield where Mr. Volk again started in business. They remained there a year, when they came to Greenwood.

Mr. Volk first started his tailor shop in the building now occupied by the Warner restaurant. Later he moved to the building on School Street where his family is now living. Under his capable management the business grew steadily and later he employed his brothers Val and William to help him handle his increasing business.

In the winter of 1904 Val Volk was taken into the business as a partner and the firm of Volk Brothers was established. The business has been conducted for the past two years in their new building on Main Street next to the post office. It has been through hard work and careful management that Mr. Volk has made a success of his business.

Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Volk, the first having died and is buried at Marshfield, Wood county, Wisconsin. Those that remain are Floyd, Perry, Alonzo, and Dorothy.

Besides his wife and children he leaves six brothers, Frank, Henry, John and Joe Volk of Milwaukee, Milwaukee county, Wisconsin, and Val and William of this city three sisters, Josephine Volk in Germany, Mrs. Joe Scharf of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mrs. Otto Chough of Copperhead, Canada.

Those of the relatives from out of town who were present at the funeral were Frank, Henry, and John Volk, Joe Riffler, Mrs. C. L. Winter and son, all of Milwaukee.

The funeral was held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock in St. Mary's Catholic church, Rev. Father Boechmann conducting the funeral service.

Many beautiful floral offerings were bestowed by friends, school children and fraternal orders.

The burial took place in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Greenwood.
