Karl, Brookes (1911 - 2001)


Brookes Karl, 90, Neillsville, Clark County, died on Saturday, July 7, 2001, at the Memorial Medical Center, Neillsville. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, July 11, at the United Church of Christ, Neillsville. The Rev. Roger Wentz officiated. Interment was in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ken Behnke, John Hubing, Ivan Joe Karl, Milan Mike Karl, Robert Karl, and Lamarr Schmitz.


Brookes Karl was born on Feb. 3, 1911, in Paynesville, Minn., to Joseph and Agnes (nee Block) Karl. When he was 3 years old, his family moved to Ellsworth. Later, they moved to Chelsea, and lived there until he was 10 years old. They then moved to Neillsville, where he attended the Riverside School. After his schooling, he worked on the Ed Deal farm and later on the Robert Frantz farm. He married Lila Knoop on June 12, 1943, in Chili. After their marriage, they continued farming. In 1968, Robert Frantz died and left his farm to him. He retired from full time farming in Jan. 1974, but remained active and involved until recently because of failing health. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, where he was an usher. For entertainment, he loved to dance and play cards.


Survivors include three sons, Bradley Karl, Neillsville, Russell (Susie) Karl, Neillsville, and Roger (Debbie) Karl, Rothschild four grandchildren, Stacey Richard, Merrill, Shelly Karl, Neillsville, Eric Sipes, and Chad Karl, both of Rothschild three great-grandchildren, Sierra and Derrick Richard, Marshfield, and Brendon Richard, Merrill one sister, Beverly Drescher, Neillsville one brother, Arnold (Gladys) Karl, Neillsville and two sisters-in-law, Clara Karl and Amber Karl, both of Neillsville.


He was preceded in death by his parents his wife, Lila Karl, on April 28, 1998 an infant daughter two infant granddaughters, Stephanie and Sherrie Karl three brothers, Richard, Rufus, and Clifford Karl one half-sister and seven half-brothers.


The Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville, assisted the family with arrangements.

Karl, Brookes (3 February 1911 – 7 July 2001)

Brookes Karl, age 90, of Neillsville died Saturday July 7 at Memorial Medical Center in Neillsville.

Brookes was born on Feb. 3, 1911 in Paynesville, MN the son of Joseph and Agnes (Block) Karl. When he was three years old, his family moved to Ellsworth. Later, they moved to Chelsea and lived there until Brookes was ten years old. They moved to Neillsville, where Brookes attended the Riverside School.

After his schooling he worked on the Ed Deal farm and later on the Robert Frantz farm. On June 12, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lila Knoop in Chili. After their marriage, they continued farming.

In 1968, Robert Frantz died and willed his farm to Brookes, who then farmed there for the rest of his life. He retired from full-time farming, in Jan. of 1974 but remained active and involved until recently because of failing health.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ where he was an usher.

For entertainment, Brookes and Lila loved to dance and play cards.

Brookes is survived by three sons, Bradley, Russell (Susie) all of Neillsville and Roger (Debbie) of Rothschild; four grandchildren, Stacey Richard of Merrill, Shelly Karl of Neillsville, Eric Sipes and Chad Karl both of Rothschild; three great-grandchildren Sierra and Darrek Richard of Merril. Brookes is further survived by one sister, Beverly Drescher of Neillsville, one brother, Arnold (Gladys() Karl of Neillsville and two sisters-in-law, Clara Karl and Amber Karl, both of Neillsville.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lila, April 28, 1998; and infant daughter, two infant granddaughters, Stephanie and Sherrie Karl; three brothers, Richard, Rufus, and Clifford Karl; a half-sister and seven half-brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wed. July 11 at the United Church of Christ in Neillsville. Pastor Roger Wentz will officiate. Music will be provide by Deon Spangler, organist and Dawn Thoma soloist. Interment will be in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Casketbearers are Ken Behnke, John Hubing, Ivan “Joe”, Milan “Mike” and Robert Karl and LaMarr Schmitz.

The Gesche Funeral Home is assisting Brookes’ family with arrangements.
