Arthur Vater

Owen, Hixon Twp., Clark Co., Wisconsin

I was asking my father-in-law, 93 year old Neil F. Vater, of rural Owen, about family history.  He told me that his uncle Arthur Vater had a cheese factory in the Township of Hixon, in Owen at the corner of X and the road that has the high bridge over the RR tracks.  He said his uncle was strict, and maybe a little sharp, with his customers regarding milk quality, and thus had difficulty keeping patrons.  Grandpa Neil didn't know what the cheese factory was called.  It would be fun to find mention of it somewhere.

I found Arthur Vater in Hixton Township in the 1900 Federal Census.  He is listed as a boarder, single, age 22, a cheesemaker, born Sept. 1877.

From family records I know Arthur Vater was born Sept. 11, 1877 in Plymouth, WI.  He was one of seven children born to Carl Frederick Vater and his wife, Elizabeth Gruenisen Vater.  Arthur never married.  He died in Saskatoon in Canada, November 14, 1950.

Art Vater didn’t stay in cheese making long. By 1906 he had filed for a homestead in Saskatchewan.

Mr. Arthur Vater has bought the Hans Nielsen brick cheese factory, located two miles northwest of town, and will put in new machinery with which to make American cheese. Mr. Vater is a first-class cheese maker, being a graduate with high honors from the State Agricultural College and having made cheese making a life study. Mr. Vater will sell his product direct to the consumer. He is making many improvements to factory and expects to have things in running order about Dec. 1st.
