Emil Josi

Sec. 22, Mead Twp., Clark Co., WI

This rare round barn was located in section 22 of the Town of Mead, on land owned by Emil Josi who built it. He is shown as the owner of the parcel in the 1926 and 1944 plat books. The property was previously owned by Joseph Brauneis who retired and moved into Greenwood.  It is currently (2010) owned by Mike Meke.  An expression in regard to a round barn was "An advantage to a round barn is there is no corner for the devil to hide."  Red seemed to be a favorite color for painting barns, probably because it was most economical and weathered longer.

On Highway MM northwest of Greenwood ware a few standing remains of a round barn foundation, with a silo in the middle. For a number of years there was a round barn there. They were few and far between so travelers often commented about this barn. Emil Josi built the barn with the silo in the center when he owned the farm. It has since had several owners but currently is now owned by Mike Meke. The horses shown below are all riding horses and are owned by Roy Williams of Friendship. Each summer Roy takes these horses to Girl Scout camps throughout the country and they are used by the girls to ride through the woods. When the camps close for the winter, horses are trucked back to Greenwood and us this land to graze until the next scouting season. No information was available as to what year the round barn went up but it burned a few years ago. Perhaps some reader could furnish us with more details.

Notes

I don’t have any personal information on Emil Josi. The plat book shows him owning 80 acres in section 22 of Mead in 1944, which was the year we moved to the farm in section 21. He probably moved away not long after because I don’t remember ever seeing him. He also owned 120 acres across the road from the barn, in section 27. I remember there being an abandoned building and possibly a windmill on that side, so maybe the house was on one side of the road and the barn on the other.  Most of his land was wooded.  I took the picture show at the top of the page in 1968, not too long before the barn burned. As I recall, it was always white, except for the last few years.  My memory of its destruction is very hazy, but it may have been a case of arson. I think there was mention of it in the TRG, so perhaps more information can be found there.  Chuck Debevec.
