The Houghton Family Of Clark County, WI

From the obituary of Jeffers Houghton later in this biography we know that the Houghton family originally came to Clark Co, WI.

Charles J. Vella, Ph.D. which anyone with Houghton roots may be interested in searching through for more clues on the Houghton family. Jeffers Houghton is listed on this site with correct information that he married Sarah Wilcox (as his obit states). It further states in his obit that HE came from NY to Illinois and then into the new state of WI. Perhaps this was the route for the Houghton family members who came to WI.

Lani note/April 2006
This information about the Houghton’s coming to Clark Co, WI around 1856 would also seem correct as they are not listed on the Clark Co, WI 1855 Census.
The Civil War Vet from Co I 14th WI Infantry, Edward Houghton came from this Family and is listed on the 1860 Federal Census for Pine Valley Township, Clark Co, WI. with a wife and child.

Clark County News July 1908

The Military Record of Clark County, Wisconsin from "The History of Clark Co., WI" by Franklyn Curtiss-Wedge, pg. 721 - 726   When President Lincoln, in 1861, called upon the loyal North for volunteers to aid the government of the United States in suppressing the rebellion in the Southern States, the County of Clark responded nobly. It then had within its borders about 120 families and a population, all told, of approximately 800. There are no records attainable relative to any enlistments for three months' service, if there were any, but the county furnished to one company of the 14th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry about thirty men. They were all enlisted and enrolled in Co. I of that regiment for three years, and when they left the state to take the field the company was in command of Capt. Calvin R. Johnson, of Black River Falls, an able lawyer and a good soldier.   The Fourteenth Regiment, it is said, was one of the best that Wisconsin put in the field. It left the state early in March, 1862, and in less than thirty days was engaged in the battle of Shiloh, where it lost nearly 100 men in killed, wounded and missing. In October of the same year the regiment lost ninety-five men killed, wounded and missing at the battle of Corinth.   The members of this regiment were with Grant at Vicksburg, in 1863, and in a charge before that city in May of that year they sustained the loss of 107 men. On the surrender of Vicksburg the regiment was given the post of honor and led the advance of the troops on their entry into the surrendered city. The members of the Fourteenth also saw service on the Red River expedition and a portion of it was with General Sherman in his Atlanta campaign. Early in 1865 they were sent to New Orleans, and shortly after were engaged with the enemy at Spanish Fort until its surrender, and were in various skirmishes along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. They were not mustered out until Oct. 9, 1865, about six months after the surrender of Lee to Grant at Appomatox Court House. General Sherman, in his memoirs, referring to regiments from Wisconsin, states that her regiments were kept filled with recruits, whereas other states generally filled their quota by new regiments, and the result was that he estimated a Wisconsin regiment equal to an ordinary brigade.

The following is a list of the members of Company I 14th Wisconsin Vol. Inf. who resided in Clark County at the time of their enlistment:

Gustavus Ayers, Louis Lynch, Charles Bacon, Edward H. Markey, Charles F. Bone, Andrew J. Manley, Chauncey Blakeslee, William Neverman, Wilson S. Covill, John O'Neill, Hy G. Chamberlain, Nelson Osgood, Benjamin Darling, Robert F. Sturdevant, Jas. W. Ferguson, John R. Sturdevant, Benjamin Folsom, Washington Short, Alexander Green, Edward Houghton, Cyrus 0. Sturgeon, Joseph Ives, Thomas Vine, John F. King, Ferdinand C. Wage, George R. King, Thomas Whitmore, and more.

Edward Houghton -In the war times his home was at Houghtonberg in the southwestern part of the county, now in the town of Mentor. The hamlet took its name from the family, of which he was a member.

Since the close of the Civil War, many of the veterans have died and at the present time only ten veterans remain living.

Edward Houghton is now a resident of Tacoma, Wash. He was the county treasurer of Clark County for two years. In the war times his home was at Houghtonberg in the southwestern part of the county, now in the town of Mentor. The hamlet took its name from the family, of which he was a member.

Humbird Lodge, No. 191, A.F.& A.M., was organized in April 1874, with thirteen members, and worked under a dispensation until June following, when it was regularly chartered, and the following officers elected: F.W.Whicomb, W.M.; H.C.Holbrook, S.W.; E.P.Houghton, J.W.; A.B.Holbrook, secretary; Warren Page treasurer, and Oliver Houghton.

The present officers are: E.P.Houghton, W.M.; E.J.Mckinley, S.W.; S.A  .Wise, J.W.; F.W. Whitcomb, secretary; Oliver Houghton, treasurer W.H Clark , S.D.; Albert Alderman, J.D.; W.H .Colfax, tyler. ---------Houghton, Elizabeth (1845 - 11 JAN 1901)

It is our sad duty this week to chronicle the death of Mrs. Edgar P. Houghton, who passed away at her home in this city (Neillsville, Clark County) on Saturday, Jan. 11, 1902, the cause of her death being consumption. She was an invalid for a number of years and although everything in the power of medical skill and loving care was done to stay the march of the dread disease, her form grew weaker from day to day till at last the life thread was sundered and she slept the sleep of death.

Elizabeth Nettleton was born in Ohio in 1845 and came with her parents to this state in 1855, settling in (some of my copy was cut off)

host of friends, all of whom fell in her death a personal loss. She was one whom to know was to respect and she possessed those sterling qualities which merit the admiration of all. To the bereaved relatives is extended the sympathy of the entire community

--------- Houghton, Jeffers (21 OCT 1828 - 12 DEC 1909)

Mr. Jeffers Houghton, the last surviving member of the original family of Houghtons who settled in Houghtonburg in 1856, died at a hospital in Minneapolis last Sunday at the age of 81 years. Mr. Houghton had enjoyed comparatively good health until about three years ago. In an effort to relieve his sufferings he was operated on a short time ago and died in the hospital Dec. 12. The funeral was held at Merrillan Tuesday afternoon and the body was interred in the Houghtonburg Cemetery.

Mr. Houghton was born in Chenango Co., N.Y., Oct. 21, 1828. He was married there to Miss Sarah Wilcox, and then migrated to Illinois and later into the new state of Wisconsin. To them were born four children, one son Nathan, of Minot, N.D., surviving. One son was killed in the war and is buried in the south. Mrs. Houghton still survives, but has been in an enfeebled condition for many years.

In the early "70's Mr. Houghton disposed of his farm and went to Augusta to live. He left there after a ten years' residence, going into Minnesota to live. For some time past Mr. Houghton had made his home with Charles Hamlin in Montevideo.

Thus passes another one of the earliest settlers of this section. All of the old settlers remaining, those who knew him best, have naught but praise for his early life and character. 'Twas the sturdy pioneers such as he, that laid the foundation in hardship that their posterity might live in happiness and plenty.

Houghton, Daughter of Hugh (APR 1911 - NOV 1911)

The little seven-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Houghton was brought from Milwaukee for burial last Thursday, and the services were held at the home of the child's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. I. C. Houghton, in Houghtonburg last Friday afternoon. Rev. A. D. Moore of Merrillan, officiated. The sunshine of parental love could not warm her life nor keep her from drooping, and in her stead is left only a holy and beautiful memory. The small body was laid to rest in the cemetery by hands that had tried to minister to her young life. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of all in their affliction.

Houghton, Mr./Mrs. Ira C. (Gold Anniv-8 JUN 1873)

On June 8, 1873, Ira Clarence Houghton, and Miss Emma Levis, an accomplished young maiden of eighteen summers, were united in the holy bonds of wedlock. The ceremony was performed at Black River Falls, where the bride was employed in a millinery shop. The groom was accumulating experience for use in later life by canvassing for books in Neillsville and vicinity. The happy young folks, and the happiness yet continues, resided on the farm in Houghtonburg with the groom's parents until the fall of that year, and then went to California, where they spent the first seven years of their married life. Returning, they have since lived in Houghtonburg, excepting one year recently spent in the Golden State.

Last Tuesday evening, about seven o'clock, Mr. and Mrs. Houghton were watching an automobile procession driving southward on the highway, only to be completely surprise as car after car turned into their farm yard. The autos were loaded with members of the Masonic and Eastern Star lodges who had gather to help Mr. and Mrs. Houghton celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Tables were spread on the lawn and all partook of a regular wedding banquet, after which Squire Travis, on behalf of the party, presented the bride and groom with a handsome token in remembrance of this notable anniversary.

Mr. and Mrs. Houghton are enjoying good health and prosperity, and are greatly esteemed in the vicinity, which has been their home for so many years. Friends without number join in wishing them many more years of wedded bliss.

--------- Houghton, Caroline (12 MAR 1823 - 8 DEC 1907)
Death claimed another of the pioneers of Houghtonburg Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Caroline Houghton, who for over fifty years had lived on the farm which she helped claim from the wilderness, answered the final summons. For a number of years she had been a partial invalid, tenderly and lovingly cared for at the home of her son. During the last few weeks she was entirely helpless and suffered much from a paralytic stroke which occurred in November. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon and the remains were laid at rest in the family lot in the Houghtonburg Cemetery, Rev. Frank O. Hesse preaching the sermon. There was a large number of the old settlers present to offer their final tribute of respect to one who had suffered with them in the sorrows and shared with them in the hopes and joys of the pioneer days.
Caroline Walker was born in Green, N.Y., March 12, 1823. She was married to Oliver Houghton of the same place, March 12, 1846. Soon after they came to Wisconsin and settled in Walworth Co., near Lake Geneva.
In the spring of 1855 in company with a number of relatives and friends and their families, they came to Jackson Co. and secured the farm that has been their home for over fifty years.
To this union was born two children, Mrs. Estella Harvey, who died in Sept 1880, and I. C. Houghton, who lives on the old home farm in Houghtonburg. Mr. Houghton died in Jan. 1898, and since that time his companion has longed to be taken too. Mrs. Houghton was one of a family of seventeen children, all of who have lived to have families of their own. One brother, Mr. William Walker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, survives her. Aunt Caroline was converted when she was a young woman and united with the Baptist Church. Many will say she was a good woman, kind and cordial to all. Strangers, as well as friends and neighbors, were always welcome to her home as long as she was able to do for them.
On Nov. 25th she was stricken with paralysis, and suffered until near the end, death relieving her Dec. 8, 1907. We cannot wish her back. The funeral was held at her late home. Rev. Frank Hesse spoke from Phil. 1:4, words of comfort and encouragement to all who heard.

--------- Houghton, Charles (27 AUG 1851)

Charles Houghton was born Aug. 27, 1851, in Allegheny Co., N.Y., and came to Wisconsin in 1855. He was the son of Sidney Houghton and still lives on the old homestead in Houghtonburg settled by his father so many years ago. He was married to Miss Mae Waltker July 4, 1876. Mrs. Houghton was an invalid for many years and passed away Jan. 1, 1894. Mr. Houghton believes that Humbird is doing as much business as any of the small towns and that we are going to see better times from now on. Extensive advertising by the merchants has drawn more trade here, which has greatly helped the town. Now if we could have a small manufacturing plant and more men with capital there would be no question of Humbird, Clark County, Wis.'s rapid growth.
