Daniel S. Francis, Civil War Soldier

1844 - 1926

Daniel was born 17 Nov 1844, the son of George W. and Fanny Francis.  His father was a native of MA and was a carpenter and his mother was a dressmaker.  The family was raised in Sutton, Merrimac, NH.  Daniel's older brother was George A. (1841) and his younger brother was Samuel J. (1847).  He also had two sisters, Franny Janet (1853) and Carrie L. (1855).  Daniel enlisted with Co. H of the 2nd Regiment of the NH Inf., 27 May 1861.  This was the same unit that Alfred Eaton served with.  Pvt. Francis' first action was at Bull Run, VA, followed by the Siege of Yorktown, Williamsburg, a Skirmish at Fair Oaks.  He also fought in the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg where he was severely wounded.  After being honorably discharged 21 June 1864, he immediately applied for his pension because of the injuries he'd sustained.  His brother George had also joined the Union Army in the fall of 1861 and fought with Co. H, 4th NH Inf.  Daniel was both a woodsman and laborer.  Margaret J. became Daniel's wife in Pierce Co., WI,2 Feb 1868.  She was born in NY Oct 1854 to an Irish father and a Scottish mother.  Margaret and Daniel farmed in Spring Lake and had an estate valued at $400 in 1870.  The nearest Post Office was in Rock Elm.  Their children were all born in Spring Lake, WI: William C. (Nov 1870, m. Ora Adams) and their twins born in June 1875Fanny B. "Frankie" (m. Edward F., the son of Chris Wollenberg) and Herbert A.  They also lost one child.  By 1880 they were farming in Thorp, WI,on a homestead in Sec. 34 which was later issued to "David L. Francis" 15 Jan 1884 at the Eau Claire Land Office.  They later moved to Greenwood where both Herbert and Fanny taught in the local schools.  Margaret died 28 May 1925 after a long illness.  At the time of his death, Daniel was nearly 82 years old.  He’d been up and around as usual until about 6 pm Thursday evening 22 Apr 1926 when he became ill.  Medical aid was summoned but he passed away at home early the next morning.  Their funeral were both held from the home they were buried beside one another in the Greenwood, WI City Cemetery.
