Shanks, William (12 APR 1840 – 7 SEP 1910)

William Shanks, brother of John and Dave Shanks of this city (Greenwood), died at his home in Castlewood, South Dakota last week Wednesday. He will probably be remembered by a few of the older residents of this city, as he lived here a number of years ago. The Hamlin County Republican published at Castlewood, has the following in its issue of September 9, 1910.

“Another of our early pioneers has finished his labors on earth and his spirit has been wafted to the Maker who gave it.

William Shanks departed his life on Wednesday afternoon after an illness of nearly a year’s duration. The cause of death was heart disease. He was one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Hamlin County and his demise is sincerely regretted by people of this place, of Hamlin County, and wherever he was known. At the time of his death he was a member of the Board of Commissioners of Hamlin County, and a member of the Board of Trustees in the town of Castlewood. He was seventy years, four months and Twenty six days old at the time of his death. The funeral will be held at 10 o’clock this morning and the burial will take place in the Castlewood Cemetery.

We will give a short history of his life in ur next issue. All place of business will be closed during the hours of the funeral services as a mark of respect to the memory of one of our leading, best known and most respected citizens.”
